There's just something about Alexa's apricot-hued cheeks and almond-shaped eyes that never fails to make us swoon (Grazia Daily)
Alexa Chung is the style icon who's spawned a thousand imitators. Since landing the gig of presenting T4's Popworld back in 2006 there's barely been a week when the fashion queen hasn't topped a best-dressed list (or three). In the latest issue of Grazia, our Big Fashion Issue in fact, we speak to Alexa about turning 30, work insecurities and how strange it is to see someone steal her style. When it comes to our beauty crushes, it’s safe to say that Alexa Chung is totally up there. What with that infamous feline flick, rosebud-esque lips (and matching flush to boot), a beyond flawless complexion and perfectly tousled tresses, there’s no surprise we’ve been swooning over Miss Chung’s beauty look for what seems like centuries. There’s no denying that Alexa has one of the most enviable and chic beauty looks around. But if, like us, you crumble under the pressure when faced with a liquid liner and struggle to attain that milky, flawless complexion, then fear not, fellow Graziettes, as the wait is finally over. We managed to catch up with the oh-so-wonderful Ashley Ward, make-up artist supreme, who gave us her top tips for a winning Alexa-esque look. Ashley's worked with the likes of Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Georgia May Jagger to name a few, so this leading lady certainly knows a trick or two about a gorgeous glow! Read on for her top tips...
Whether she's sporting a feline flick or perfectly lined eyes, Miss Chung gives us serious eye-envy
Ashley would always advocate using a liquid liner for a Chung-worthy flick. She says, “It’s easier to apply with a pointed brush that comes with any liquid liner. I love Lancome’s Art Liner, £18. Start from the inside corner of the eye and draw a very fine line, following the natural line of the eye. Then, start flicking up and out from the end of the lashes- it's essentially cheating the eye shape a little to give an almond shape but it’s a really natural look which is totally gorgeous!” Finish off the look with a slick of mascara. During the day, Ashley recommends Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara, £19.50 and for some seriously luscious lashes come evening, arm yourself with YSL’s Faux Cils Maximum Effect Mascara, £23. To really emphasise the flick, corner lashes can be added. Ashley loves Laura Mercier’s false lashes but Naturalash in 020 are a good budget-friendly option too. Not blessed with amazing lashes? Try RevitaLash Advanced Eyelash conditioner, £61.20 to stimulate eyelash growth and thickness.
A couple of Alexa's skincare heroes
“A flawless complexion is best achieved with perfect skin so great skin care really is very important. Try exfoliating cleanser balms such as Eve Lom, Elemis or Liz Earle which all come with a balm and muslin flannel. They all give a really lovely cleansed, rehydrated, polished look to the skin. Don’t forget to moisturise, too- I love Guerlain’s Super Aqua Serum, £65.50 because its non-greasy, but Racinne’s Ultimate Hydra Perfection Advanced luminous Gel, £32 is also fantastic.”
“For a wonderfully radiant complexion like Alexa’s, arm yourself with a light foundation base. I love Giorgio Armani’s Maestro Fusion Make-up, £38. For ladies who prefer a tinted moisturiser, you can’t go wrong with Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturiser, £33. Give the cheeks a soft warm glow with Chanel Cream Blush in Presage.”
The best way to top off a sultry feline flick or heavier smokey eye is a slick of nude colour or balm. Ashley’s favourite? Dr Lipp’s Nipple Balm, £11.50.
