Beauty news flash! Freckles are BACK! Whilst us beauty girls are used to faking pretty much everything- from hair colour to lip colour- freckles are one thing we never thought we’d see on our beauty list… until now. Backstage at the spring/summer 2014 shows, we spied a true plethora of bare-faced, glowing complexions, with, accordingly, many a smattering of youth-boosting freckles.

Demi Lovato was proud to show off her freckles on Instagram (@ddlovato)

Once a facialist’s nightmare (freckles are, after all, evidence of skin damage), it seems like the humble freckle is having a bit of a moment. In fact, models backstage at this season’s Paul Smith show and the likes of Emma Stone and Sienna Miller are proof enough that the time has come to arm yourself with a freckle pencil. Lucky for you, beauty mavericks Topshop have just added one to their stellar makeup collection- and we’re seriously impressed. Although we’ve seen freckle pencils before- the beauty of Topshop’s latest offering is that it features a marbleised formula to ensure each freckle is totally unique. Clever stuff.

Want in? Topshop beauty consultant Hannah Murray, who works on the makeup for the Topshop Unique shows told us, “Whenever I do freckles for shoots or catwalk shows, I use multiple brow pencils in a range of hues in order for them to look realistic - no freckles are the same colour.” Read on to discover Hannah’s top tips for working freckles with your face shape…

1. If you have a ROUND face:

“Scatter freckles across the higher planes of the face where you would naturally catch the sun. Begin at the bridge of the nose, keeping the freckles dense and sweep down the sides of the nose and onto the cheeks. Place a few freckles around the lower lip and across the forehead.”

2. If you have a SQUARE face:

“Concentrate freckles around the bridge of the nose and scatter across the cheeks keeping them slightly spaced out as you extend the freckles towards the hairline and across the forehead.”

3. If you have a HEART shaped face:

“With a feather light touch sparsely place freckles on the top of the nose for a natural finish and delicately across the cheeks.”

4. If you have an OVAL face:

“For a classic oval shape, wear dense freckles across the bridge of the nose and directly under the eyes, with sparser freckles across the cheekbones.”
