EXCLUSIVE: Shingai Shoniwa Is L'Oreal Mizani's New Celebrity Ambassador! Here Are Her Beauty Secrets

16 May 2013 by

As lead singer of The Noisettes, it’s safe to say Shingai Shoniwa is pretty well respected in the music industry, known for her remarkable talent as main vocalist and bassist within the group. However, fast forward to world of fashion and beauty and it’s safe to say the dazzling 31 year old is pretty well known here too, notorious for her eclectic hairstyles and bold beauty looks.

So, we think it’s pretty fitting that L’Oreal Mizani have scooped her up as their first-ever celebrity brand ambassador.  Shoniwa’s statement do’s have always had us in constant awe, with never a strand out of place, so this is a perfect fit for a range like Mizani, which focuses on luxury hair care for curly, textured, African-Caribbean and mixed-race hair.

Last week, we were lucky enough to catch up with Shingai herself, who shared with us her beauty secrets. Miss Shoniwa gushed, “I’m a huge fan of Mizani’s products and its philosophy. I love to experiment and I’m constantly changing my style, so the Mizani range is perfect for me”. Read on and learn, ladies!

Grazia Daily: What are your three desert island essential beauty products?

Shingai Shoniwa: MIZANI Coconut Soufflé Light Moisturizing Hairdress, £12.50, to stop my hair getting dry while I’m marooned on the beach.  Astral cream, I apply it to every corner of my skin to keep it hydrated and Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24H Foundation, £27.50 – they’ve recently added four more shades, which is great for those with darker skin.

Grazia Daily: Do you believe diet is important in keeping you looking beautiful?

Shingai Shoniwa: Yes I definitely do believe diet is important for your beauty regime! Water is essential because we’re two thirds water as well as lots of greens and seafood – I like mackerel and plantain. I believe in balancing all aspects of your lifestyle rather than cutting out everything, for example dessert is good – just not too much of it. I also think you should eat real things rather synthetic produce, like butter over margarine!

Grazia Daily: How long does it take you to get ready on a night out?

Shingai Shoniwa: When getting ready for a night out a girl should have three options in her beauty arsenal – a quick 10 minute regime using 2-3 products, a 20 minute one with 4-6 products and finally a 40 minute ritual when you get out the big guns, your favourite products. Choose the one to suit the occasion – always have flexibility.

Grazia Daily: What’s your favourite makeup look for the day? And for the evening?

Shingai Shoniwa: My ultimate day look is to keep it fresh, drawing more attention to the eyes rather than the lips – I don’t really do a strong lip in the day. For the evening, I’ll add a bit of shimmer, colour and lippy, turning up the volume on my day look.

Grazia Daily: How do you keep your hair in such great condition?

Shingai Shoniwa: My hair has come on leaps and bounds since using MIZANI. The combination of using MIZANI’s products, which are specifically created for curly hair textures like mine and amazing hair stylists like Charlotte Mensah have made such a difference. I go into see Charlotte at the Hair Lounge on Portobello Road to relax and escape – what I love about her is the balanced way she treats the hair – hair shouldn’t be stressful. Lots of people with naturally curly textures can find it difficult and time-consuming to maintain their hair, which is why I think MIZANI has done an amazing job to promote variety and given us options to care for and style our different hair types – every girl needs options! They have so many ranges from True Textures for those embracing their natural curl to Thermasmooth to help you get a sleek result and Moisturfusion, which keeps hair hydrated, it’s so refreshing. I’m open to trying all hair textures and shapes – I say lets get back to when hair was fun!

Grazia Daily: What’s the best makeup trick you’ve learnt from a makeup artist?

Shingai Shoniwa: I’ve learnt a few great tricks from make-up artists like to always moisturise before using foundation and it’s essential to use a brush to apply it. Also, ensure you do your make-up in good light – if you can’t see well, put the brush down, opting for a well-lit space will help you achieve the most flawless finish.

Grazia Daily: What’s your beauty mantra?

Shingai Shoniwa: My mantra is that the beauty we have inside should be enhanced by what we put on the outside. I believe products should enhance your natural beauty not replace it. Finally, that variety is the spice of life!
