Chanel Makeup's Creative Director Peter Philips Has Resigned: We Remember His Greatest Hits

13 February 2013 by

It seems to be a week or resignations. First the Pope and now the sad news that Chanel’s creative director, Peter Philips, is stepping down. Philips was the man responsible for all the things we love about Chanel makeup, from those incredible skin tattoos to the bejewelled eyebrows.

Peter is something of a legend in the fashion and beauty world and has been at the helm at Chanel for a wholesome 5 years. His clever ideas and genius collections saw the brand go from strength to strength, hence the shock of this sad news. But hey, when one door closes and all that. Philips became the fashion house’s global creative director in 2008 and since then has shaken things up, offering classic palettes and skin-perfecting beauty tools to modern skin transfers that were exchanging on eBay for ten times their retail value. Now if that’s not pretty cool…

Chanel released a statement to say, “Peter Philips, as Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, has brought his talent, creativity and vision to CHANEL makeup and made women dream, the world over. After five successful years, Peter Philips has decided to return to a more independent position continuing his work as an artist collaborating with the best photographers, stylists and models for editorials and projects such as Chanel fashion shows.

“The Chanel Makeup Studio, which has supported him during his tenure, will ensure the continuity, the creativity and the quality of the Brand's makeup products and collections. Peter Philips has left an indelible mark on Chanel Makeup and his contribution to the Brand is an important part of the CHANEL legacy. He will remain a cherished friend and contributor to the House of Chanel."

Peter, we’ll miss you terribly and wish you well in your next venture and in the mean time we’ve picked our top 5 beauty moments of yours…

1. The Modern Smokey Eye

Peter made the classic smokey eye all modern and cool in one fell swoop with frosty silver shadow and immaculate contouring. Everyone copied him immediately.

2. Bejewelled Brows

Possibly his most iconic move, Peter turned eyebrows into works of art at the brand's AW12 show and had fashion peeps everyone trying to get hold of the sparkly, jewelled visions he affixed to models liek Cara. Sadly for us, they weren't for sale.

3. Must-Have Nails

Peter has created varnish after varnish of irresitible shades, Particuliere and Jade Rose to name a few. One of our faves was this metallic number which we still have a bottle of and will cherish forever.

4. Marie Antoinette Makeup

Never before have we wanted to be like the Parisian Queen that was Marie Antoinette after seeing Philips' gorgeous and fresh makeup at the SS10 show. Peach cheeks, plump nude lips and bronze eyes were top of our makeup list that season.

5. The First To Do Luxe Lashes

Right before any of the other brands went lash crazy, Peter led the way with these metallic numbers at the AW09 show. Always one step ahead, he creates and everyone follows in his steps.
