Although it’s no surprise that one of our favourite past-times is hanging out with make-up artists of every description (all those products! The secret tips! The brushes! We love it all…), we got a little bit hot under the collar when we caught sight of a recent interview with Beyoncé’s make-up artist Francesca Tolot. Tolot is a total legend in the beauty industry- prior to her stint with Queen Bey she was Elizabeth Taylor’s make-up artist for 20 years and Helmut Newton used to personally request her for projects. Heck, we’re talking serious beauty royalty. So, want to know every last detail of Beyonce’s make-up routine? We do. Read on to discover the 7 things we learnt from Francesca…
1. Beyoncé is so beautiful, she barely needs any makeup
“Even if we have to do a bare look, like for “If I Were A Boy”, there was practically no make-up there. For that, I use moisturizer and maybe a little bit of concealer and lip balm. I really love La Mer The Radiant Concealer. It’s nice- enough coverage, but it’s very moisturizing and it doesn’t dry or crease.”
2. In fact, it's very hard to make her look bad
"One of the hardest looks to do was for "Cadillac Records" when she looked so distressed. Can you imagine—because, you know how beautiful she is—to make her look like that? Somebody with perfect skin, beautiful almond-shaped eyes, very luminous and happy and full of joy—to make her look so bad? I don't know how I did it; it was very, very hard to make her look like that".
3. The secret to her glowing skin? Baby oil
“The ultimate use of baby oil… after you shoot, you just wipe it off with a towel and your skin is so nice and smooth and soft. And sometimes I mix in some shimmer to the oil.”
4. Beyoncé rarely wears false lashes
“One (mascara) that I find myself using on her a lot is MAC In Extreme Dimension Mascara. My other favourite is L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes. But I don’t use (false) eyelashes a lot on Beyoncé anymore. Except for that look in the "Blow" video, when we went for a really ‘70s look. But we stopped using lashes quite a few years ago. At one point I brought up the fact that I feel that false eyelashes are dated, unless you're going for the retro look. So I talked to her about that, and she totally agreed.”
5. Beyoncé is in charge of her beauty look
“She’s very smart—whatever we do is her project. It’s her. Usually there’s a message in the song, which influences the way it’s going to be filmed, and the wardrobe, and the choreography… and that will inspire the look for the makeup.”
6. Beyoncé isn't afraid of anyone
“I’m telling you, she is very professional and she feels confident. She's good with herself, so she’s not afraid of what somebody else would think. If it’s needed for the project, then she’ll do it.”
