Does the word 'colour' make you quake in your boots? Have you ever cowered from bright shades? We can all get stuck in a make up rut. Whether it's cat eye liner, an old favourite neutral eyeshadow or just the same old gloss everyday, we all like to stick to what we know. But, a change is nothing to be feared, and despite how scary colour might sound, there are ways to work brights and even neons into your make up repetoire without going full 80s. Colour can be fun, stylish and even sophisticated when it's done right. Read on for our ten hot tips to make colour your thing, from the softest pastels to the boldest brights.

1. Try coloured mascara

This may be a bit of a hard sell, but purple mascara doesn't necessarily have to LOOK purple. Choose something like the Terrybly Mascara in Iconic Bordeaux (£32.00, Space NK), which will give your lashes a coat of deep browny-purple that looks almost black, but catches the light for a soft purple flash when you flutter those bad boys. Perfect for a softer look, we love the 'Terrybleu' and 'Purple Success', too.

2. Play with eyeliner

There's so many ways to wear liner. Try a soft kohl, like Urban Decay's 24/7 Velvet Glide On Pencils, (£15, new shades available in Debenhams in August) in the waterline or in your lower lash line for a subtle colour burst. We love the new shades like Cult, Minx and Plushie to accentuate eyes of all colours. Bonus points as these offerings from Urban Decay are utterly unmoving, even in the stickiest heat. Be bold and say goodbye to black.

3. Opt for a sheer wash of colour

The easiest way to apply eyeshadow is to use one of those handy crayon style pens and pretend you're doing some colouring in. Clinique's Chubby Sticks for Eyes (£17.00, counters nationwide) are perfect for a soft sheen on the lids - creamy and buildable, they go on pale but can be intensified to a stronger pigment. We love 'Plush Periwinkle', 'Two Ton Teal' and 'Pink and Plenty' for a summery pop of colour.

4. Pucker up

If you're really not sure which colour suits your eyes, try a bold lip. We love E.l.f's Studio Matte Lipsticks for their longevity and selection of shades - try Rich Red and Tea Rose (£3.95, www.eyelipsface.co.uk) for a seriously statement pout.

5. Turn the other cheek

Nothing livens up the complexion like a bit of blush, and it can even help contour your face for some seriously killer cheekbones. Try a brighter shade for summer, like coral or pink. Topshop's Cream Blush in Flush (£7.00, Topshop, below left) looks great on the apples of cheeks for a pretty, fresh look.

6. Update your cat eye

If you can't be parted from your feline flick, try a liquid liner in another colour. The NARS Eyeliner Stylo in Atlantic (£20.50, www.narscosmetics.co.uk, above right) is a deep blue that will be subtle enough for colour-phobes but still give your look a bright update.

7. Be a candyfloss girl

Dip dye ain't dead. And crazy colour rinses will always make you look like the coolest girl around. If you're not ready to make the commitment to permanent, try Bleach London's Super Cool Colours (£5.00, Boots, below right), at-home dyes that last up to ten washes. Go for all-over colour or work strategically for an ombre look. We love Rosé's washed-out pink tone.

8. Amp up your lip colour

Want to turn up the volume on your favourite lipstick? Or deepen a statement shade? Try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Balm Duo in Tarred & Feathered (£11.00, Love Makeup, above left) - looks like a weird black and white lip balm, but it's actually a primer than will darken or lighten your natural lip shade respectively. Your chosen lipstick will then adjust for a bolder look.

9. Talk to the hand

Or the nail, more specifically. In the warmer months, bold nail hues are suddenly so much more appealing; nothing's pretty than lovely bronzed hands and feet with a bright nail shade. Try OPI's new neons, like 'Life Gave Me Lemons', 'You're So Outta Lime' and 'Hotter Than You Pink' (£11.95, John Lewis) for a poolside-perfect look.

10. Try a bold gloss

Lipstick too fussy? Or love the super-shiny look? Try Illasmasqua's Intense Lipglosses (£16.50, www.illamasqua.com, Fierce, Indulge and Mistress L-R) for a seriously kissable pout. We love these bold shades for a quick way to add a flash of colour, and lipgloss is SO much easier maintenance than a matte lipstick.
