10 Hot Ways To Stay Sun Safe

Of course, we all know the sun’s not good for us. While a smattering of Vitamin D can be beneficial, there’s enough evidence linking the sun to premature skin aging and skin cancer to make most of us run to the shade. GLOSSYBOX, the people behind those boxes of tanatalising products that drop on the doorsteps of their monthly subscribers, conducted a global survey into tanning habits and found that us Brits are pretty sun-savvy, with 95% choosing a foundation or moisturiser with SPF in for summer. We're also big fans of the SPF 50 here in the UK, which is just as well, as 68% of us like to be outside during the hottest part of the day. As 64% of GLOSSYBOX's subscribers fork out more money in the summer on beauty, we thought we'd put together our ten best tips and products to help keep you sun-safe. And - three cheers - it doesn’t mean having to compromise on the make up you love, or walk around feeling distinctly greasy. Here comes the sun, and it’s alright...

1. Prepare for the sun

Unless you’ve just been away, the sun’s going to come as a shock to your system. Luckily, Institut Estederm’s UVinCellium Bronzant Spray (£42.50, Space NK, below left) can help ready your skin before sun exposure. You can use it up to seven days before going away, or during intense sun as an extra boost, or after sunbathing to help prolong a tan. The clever patented technology in the bottle helps to get your skin ready for summer by boosting melanin production, while protecting against sunburn and damage to the cells by UV rays. A quicker, deeper, but more importantly, safer, tan.

2. Cover all bases

When it’s hot out, it pays to switch your primer to one that’ll pack a sun-protecting punch. The new Soap & Glory Make Yourself Youthful SunShield Superfluid (£15.00, Boots, above right) has a broad-spectrum SPF 50, meaning you’re safe from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the nasty aging ones, where as UVB rays are the ones that make you go red. A high factor base like this will help keep your skin looking lovely for longer - and bonus points, your make up stays in place too!

3. On-the-go protection

We love the Goldfaden MD Sun Visor (£40.00, Space NK, below right) here at Grazia - it comes in a handy spray bottle, and comes out like a fine mist, making it perfect to spritz over make up or on the backs of hands to keep age spots at bay. With an SPF of 30, it’s solid protection against strong sun.

4. Keep skin nourished

The new Clarins Sun Care Oil Spray (£19.00, counters nationwide, above left) is the best of both worlds; with Nyamplung fruit extract and botanical oils, it helps to nourish skin and hair and give it a lovely sheen, but it still has a high factor SPF30, meaning you’re protected when you step out in the sun. The broad-spectrum oil helps feed the skin, and the delicate tropical scent makes this a Grazia beach bag staple.

5. Make your foundation work for you

Lots of foundations have SPF in them, but not all of them are broad spectrum. If you’re going to skip a separate SPF for fear of product overload, try Dr Perricone’s No Foundation Foundation, (£48.00, Space NK, below left) which has the UVA and UVB filters up to SPF30. Perfect for those who like sheerer, more breathable coverage, this baby’s got your back when the sun’s scorching.

6. Don’t forget your hair

Hair needs protecting, too! Try the PhytoPlage Protective Sun Veil, (£15.00, Space NK) a handy spray with nourishing sunflower and sweet almond extracts to keep hair healthy, an a protective UV filter to banish sun damage. Plus, the UV filter will help keep coloured hair from going brassy.

7. Remember to cover up

Your future self will thank you for being so diligent with sunscreen application, but even so, it’s best to avoid the sun when it’s at its strongest. Between midday and four in the afternoon, try and stay in the shade, and invest in a super-chic, 70s style wide brim hat to keep the sun off your face. It’s a better bet than burning.

8. Work with the sun

This is a little stroke of genius from By Terry - the Serum Terrybly Sunbooster (£68.00, Space NK) works with your skin to tap into your natural tanning ability to give you colour without the need for sun exposure, or use fake tan. It unlocks the pigment in your skin for a natural, radiant glow to your face. We may not understand the science, but we do love a safe tan that doesn’t wash off.

9. Ensure your colour

If you’re super pale, or struggle to tan, consider trying Guerlain’s Terracotta After Sun Cream (below right). Use the cream after sun exposure, and Guerlain's tan-boosting complex will help to lock in your colour and deepen your tan. Don’t scrimp on the SPF, however, as this doesn’t protect you from UV rays.

10. Cool off

Once you’re done sunbathing, your skin will want a little extra TLC. Try the refreshing Continuous Aloe Mist from Hampton Sun, (£30.00, Space NK, above left) which helps to soothe skin with aloe vera, vitamin E and menthol, whilst giving you an instant cooling effect. Perfect for super-sticky days, the mist helps to rehydrate parched skin.
