GALLERY >> Charles Worthington Talks BAFTA Hair

Sarah Jessica Parker

Charles Worthington: 'I thought she looked fabulous with that smooth, sleek hair. I wanted to make her look a bit London. She’s always seen with those waves and full, textured hair and because she was wearing that all in one jumpsuit I thought it was really nice to have it sleek, shiny and smooth. I thought she looked fabulous.'

Charles' Hair how-to

1. Prep the hair with Charles Worthington Pro Heat Repair Milk, £12.99 to protect the hair from styling.
2. Blow dry the hair with a flat brush to keep the hair as smooth and sleek as possible.
3. Finally run straightening irons through the hair.
4. Add a touch of Charles Worthington Brilliant Shine Finishing Touch Polish, £5.19 to smooth any last minute flyaways.
5. Spray a touch of Charles Worthington Brilliant Shine Max Hold Hairspray, £5.19

Emilia Fox

Charles Worthington: 'I did a bit of a twist on a 40s roll really, so twisting the hair back from her face. Then of course there was all the excitement when she came into the suite with £3.2million worth of diamonds on, it was outrageous, absolutely incredible, it was diamonds and emeralds.'

Charles' hair how-to

1. Prepare the hair with the Charles Worthington Instant Amplifying Volume Treatment, £14.99
2. Use a round brush to blow dry the hair. Once the hair is dry start at the front, pick up sections of the hair and roll from one side to the other.
3. Once all the hair is secured in place, pull the fingers through the hair to break up.
4. Finally to keep the hair looking glossy and glam spritz Charles Worthington Shine All Over Gloss Spray, £5.19

Alice Eve

Charles Worthington: 'I wanted to make her look a little bit sci-fi because she’s in the new Star Trek movie that comes out later this year and she had a quiff at the front and then a sculptured look.'

Charles' hair how-to

1. Prepare the hair with the Charles Worthington Instant Amplifying Volume Treatment, £14.99
2. Blow dry the hair so that it is roughly dried, it is best to dry the hair upside down for maximum volume.
3. Once the hair is 80% dry, backcomb the hair.
4. Taking a horse shoe section from temple to temple, take a flat brush and smooth the hair.
5. Take the hair and make a tight roll, using long pins secure the
hair into place.
6. Now take the section at the front, sculpt and shape and pin/roll
into place.
7. Spray the hair with plenty of Charles Worthington Brilliant Shine Max Hold Hairspray, £5.19 and add a little Charles Worthington Brilliant Shine All Over Gloss Spray, £5.19 to add shine.

Helen Mirren

Charles Worthington: 'I actually heard that she did it for Breast Cancer Awareness. I don’t know whether that’s true or not – but when I heard that I thought wow, ok, good on you.

'I love that she was smiling and laughing the whole time. It was cheeky and cute and she knew she was going to catch the attention of the press by doing it. I like people being daring, something like that is going to wash out in a few washes and she’s back to normal again so you haven’t made a statement for too long.'

Jennifer Lawrence

Charles Worthington: 'I think Jennifer Lawrence looked very cool. I thought it was very London – I don’t think she’d do that for a red carpet event in America. It was quite fashion week actually, it was almost like a runway look.'

Jessica Chastain

Charles Worthington: 'She was always going to have her Hollywood waves tumbling down. I thought she looked very good with that red hair which is just spectacular.'

Official BAFTA stylist Charles Worthington set up camp last night in the Savoy, styling stars including Sarah Jessica Parker, Alice Eve and Emilia Fox in the Charles Worthington Style Suit. Jennifer Lawrence was also spotted in the pop up for a last minute retouch before heading on stage.

Grazia Daily caught up with him post-BAFTAs to find out why he chose the looks, how to re-create the red carpet looks at home and what it was like to work with Ms SJP.

Grazia Daily: How did the weather affect your styling?

Charles Worthington: 'Luckily the weather didn’t affect Sarah's hair. She has got naturally full, wavy hair so too much humidity in the air can really affect her hair. So I had to make sure that I was using product (Charles Worthington Home Pro Heat Repair Milk, £12.99) that would combat that and it worked incredibly well because it stayed sleek all night. The girls really did get wet - all of them were standing posing for photographs and they obviously had to take the umbrellas away. It was lovely to see Sarah Jessica’s hair hold up to that.'

Grazia Daily: What was SJP like to work with?

Charles Worthington: 'I really enjoyed her company, she was very, very down to earth. She has a lovely demeanour and a great character. She had no diva-ish behaviour at all. I had my assistant Becky with me and she was always drawing her into the conversation as well and I always think that is very nice when people include everybody around them. I was very impressed.'

Grazia Daily: Did she have much input into what look she wanted?

Charles Worthington: 'For Sarah Jessica I suggested we did a smooth look, but she said it might be nice to have a little bit of a wave. But because I wanted her to look different from how she normally looks I managed to use my persuasive powers to say 'let’s see how it looks really smooth and sleek and we can always add a bit of wave if you want to afterwards.' But once I'd done it, she said 'this is absolutely perfect, as long as you think it’s perfect Charles then we’ll go with it.' It was really lovely that she put her trust in me.'

Grazia Daily: Was it the jumpsuit that made you want to try a different look?

Charles Worthington: 'The jumpsuit was very streamlined so I thought the hair would work with a clean line as well. If you’ve got a dress that has a lot of detail with ruffles and textures then sometimes you can create more texture in the hair, because it blends well. It's important to take all that into account, but one key thing to always consider is the face shape. At the end of the day your hair frames your face, so it’s really important to have a style that really does suit you.'

Grazia Daily: Were the girls nervous?

Charles Worthington: 'However seasoned they are or however many times they’ve done it, they do get nervous because they know that the world’s eyes are on them and that as soon as they’re on the edge of the red carpet every little bit of them is being analysed. It's a little bit like me, as I get nervous because I care about somebody looking good. With the actresses they get nervous because they do want to get it right.'

Grazia Daily: Were you hoping to see more daring styles at the BAFTAs?

Charles Worthington: 'I think I was. London can be used to be a bit more daring. At the end of the day these actresses don’t want to be too daring as they have everyone criticising them for it. Everything is so immediate, the minute they appear on the red carpet it is being tweeted to the world within seconds and so you can’t risk making a mistake. That’s why they stay safe sometimes, maybe they would like to try something different, but then nobody wants to be criticised.'

Grazia Daily: What is the process of choosing a red carpet hairstyle to work with the the dress?

Charles Worthington: 'Often there are one or two dresses that they are deciding to wear and that’s when we have a little bit of input. I'll say 'If you’re going to wear that dress then I suggest this would work…if you’re going to wear that dress this would…' That’s where I think the final choice of the dress comes in.

Then it’s a matter of tweaking. We pretty much finish the hair and then once the dress goes on you suddenly get an overall picture. Sometimes we might have the hair down and it’s all lovely, and then they put the dress on which might be slightly asymmetric and you suddenly think, oh it might be nice to pin the hair back to one side. So sometimes once the dress goes on, the final tweaking might be more than just tweaking and you might be changing the look.'
