Hair accessories need a new publicist. For as long as we can remember, they've been relegated to the heads of schoolgirls and associated with Pippi Longstocking braids, knee-high socks and jelly shoes.

Yet, as so expertly demonstrated at this week's Couture Week shows, hair accessories can look both chic and sophsticated when worn in the right way.

Erase images of scrunchies and bobbles - think elegant barrettes, delicate crows and intricate headbands.

Versace's girl was a sultry nymph with a dark crown of leaves atop her head, whereas Valentino's model army all wore a different tiara-esque headband, adorned with gold leaf and other details.

Lily Rose Depp turned heads without even being on the catwalk at Chanel's show with her dainty, star-emblazoned headband.

The key to success - other than choosing a fabulous headband, of course - is how you wear your hair with it. Polished, stiff curls won't work, and nor will poker-straight lengths. Instead, go for something more nonchalant and easy-going, like soft waves or a low ponytail.

If you're lucky enough to be blessed with natural curls, let them loose and tease them as much as you please - the secret is to add enough insouciance that it cancels out the ostentatiousness of the crown.

Wear it loud and proud, ladies - you are a queen, after all.
