Rose Gallagher started her blog, Mixed Gems, during her time at university. She has since developed her passion for beauty, bagging a job with one of her favourite brands while continuing to post on the subject. We love Mixed Gem's mix of makeup tutorials, product reviews and the ever so handy A-Z section. Read our Q&A with the beauty blogger to find out more...
Grazia Daily: How long have you been blogging?
Rose Gallagher: I've been blogging for around two and a half years, but just this summer I decided to relaunch my blog to feature just beauty.
Grazia Daily: What made you decide to start your blog?
Rose Gallagher: I was interning for a magazine in Birmingham called Fused and they used to have me update their blog. Before then I hadn't even heard of a blog but creating content for theirs was so much fun. They encouraged me to start my own, for which I will always be grateful because it is now my favourite hobby.
Grazia Daily: Which subjects do you particularly love blogging about?
Rose Gallagher: For me, there is nothing more exciting to blog about than beauty. With beauty, I think there is always the opportunity to link a reader with something that is perfect for them. Beauty is easy for me to blog about because I work in the industry and I have always been into it; it is almost like keeping a detailed diary because it is such a huge part of my routine.
Grazia Daily: Are there any particular perks of blogging?
Rose Gallagher: I would say the best perk of blogging is that it can lead to conversations that you might never have had. By linking my blog to social media, I have made friends I might never have made and have even got a job for a beauty brand I love. They got to know me through my blog (I was always raving about them), and when the time came that they had an opening they knew that I was truly passionate about their brand.
Grazia Daily: What are your favourite beauty brands?
Rose Gallagher: I have so many, but if I had to choose I would say the following: Liz Earle, Lancome, and Elizabeth Arden for skincare, Leighton Denny, Ciate and Essie for nails, Tweezerman for tools, Illamasqua, Peaches and Cream, Benefit, YSL and bareMinerals for make-up, Daniel Sandler for brushes, Moroccanoil and Philip Kingsley for hair, Nuxe and L'Occitane for body and Clarisonic as an absolute essential!
Grazia Daily: Blog brag time: why should people read your blog?
Rose Gallagher: Although I try and test everything that I feature I also share it with my family. When I've recommended it, it often has the seal of approval from me, my older sister and my mom - that's three generations. We're a tough crowd to please and so if it's on the blog, it has been through the mill! Also, I'm a trained make-up artist so I tend to tell you how to use a product and not just what I've thought of it.
Grazia Daily: What advice do you have for anyone starting a blog?
Rose Gallagher: This may seem like strange advice but I would advise not to read too many blogs. There are so many bloggers (and so many wonderful bloggers) that it can be easy to compare yourself to others. Find your own feet and figure out your own style before entering into the blogging community; readers will be much more inclined to keep track of something new than to follow yet another blogger using a tried and tested format. Instead, seek inspiration from figures in your field that you admire. I never miss a beauty feature by Newby Hands or Nicola Moulton.
Grazia Daily: Which other beauty blogs do you love?
Rose Gallagher: The Peaches and Cream blog is by far the most original beauty blog out there. Charlotte Tilbury has a fantastic blog and makes her make-up masterpieces so attainable. The editorial section of feelunique.com, Beauty All Access, is unbeatable for beauty features. Caroline Burke does the most tremendous nail art. And as well as blogs, I love my beauty tweeters! My favourite feeds are @KarlaPowellMUA, @NewbyBeauty, @BeautyMartUK and @DanielSandler.
