Ethereal princess meets city slicker might have been the look Raf Simmons prescribed for his Dior couture models. Hair was centre parted and tucked neatly behind the ears for a no-mess / studious school girl look, while lips popped out with a lick of zingy red lippie. Remind you of playing with lip gloss and the like in the girl’s toilets? Us too…

The highlight though? The winged eye shadow that varied in shades from turquoise to hot pink. Subtle enough that blink (pardon the eye related pun) and you might miss it, the eye make-up touted just enough pizazz to keep the rest of the city femme vibe quirky. A rather fairy tale beginning for Mister Simmons in the Dior beauty stakes.

Giambattista Valli

If the eye shadow at Dior’s show hinted at ethereal fairy chic, Giambattista Valli’s was a full blown Midsummer Night’s Dream affair. Pale complexions were treated to a large dose of glitter around the eyes (remind you of over-eager girly home makeovers when you first discovered glitter?) and were covered with netted veils. Butterflies perched on top of heads and on lips added to this fairyness too. We can’t see them becoming a must-have buy in the beauty accessory stakes but who doesn’t love a bit of magic when watching a show?

Gracing the couture catwalk for just the second time since 2004, Donatella Versace’s femmes were full of sass, class and particularly shiny-haired. With soft feminine locks slicked down – often over one eye – gently unfolding into pristine curls, this was rich girl hair at its slickest. Millie Mackintosh and K-Middy eat your heart out.

The make-up might have made our DoC blush, however. Sultry eyes were the order of the day, with dark shades swept across the lower and upper lids. Contrasted against a nude lip and  bouncing tendrils, the look made for a chic version of that good-girl-gone-bad that designers always love, as well as us of course.

It was little cutie Cindy Lou Who who stole the show at the Alexis Mabille show. Lathered up with lashings of hair gel, the Cindy Lou ‘dos had statement bling on each ‘antenna’ tip - for that luxury Grinch vibe, obvs. It is Couture Fashion Week after all.

Aside from the crystal chandelier – we’re pretty sure Claire’s must do an affordable alternative – we’re curious about how that antenna stays so perky on top of the models’ heads. Maybe there’s some wire under all that gel? Whatever the dealio is one thing’s for sure - scraped back  hair makes for an instant face lift. We wouldn’t mind that rosy hue of little Cindy, but can we cope with the ridiculous looks we might attract? The beauty debate is on.
