Here in the Grazia beauty department we are rather (ok, make that TOO) fond of the no makeup make-up look. Season after season we can be found swooning shamelessly backstage at shows like Balmain, Bluemarine, Isabel Marant and Burberry that turn out flawless, dewy-skinned girls year on year.
On a night out, meanwhile, we will inevitably choose tinted moisturiser over foundation, a lip butter over that sexy red lippie that we really should be working and that trusty ol' brown mascara instead of black. Yes, we are beauty advocates, honest. But hey, you’ve got to agree that there’s nothing fresher than looking like you have no makeup on at all, right?
Over the past couple of weeks, our beady eyes have spotted that we are not alone in championing going, so to speak, au natural. Last night, for example, Emma Stone and Anna Friel worked the barely-there vibe for The Amazing Spider Man London premiere while Keira Knightley was in LA giving it a go at The End of the World premiere. We also spied Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio, Olivia Wilde and Vanessa Paradis following suit (check them out in the gallery above).

But don’t be fooled into thinking that dabbling with this trend means you can leave your makeup bag at home – oh no. Backstage, this look is reknowned for being one of the most tricky and time-consuming to conjur up. We kid you not.
While in Cannes a few weeks ago (as you do) we caught up with the uber-chic Dior Makeup Designer Violette, who kindly shared her no make-up make-up secrets with us as we admired the Dior Makeup Suite at the Majestic Hotel. 'It’s all about building up sheer layers of product, rather than over-applying make-up which can be very aging and shows up in front of flash bulbs too,' she explained.
Violette also swears by massaging a rich moisturiser into the skin pre-make-up to condition and relax it, making product easier to apply. 'Only apply foundation and concealer where you need it,' she added. 'But using a highlighter on the nose, cheekbones, cupid's bow and under the lip is my favorite trick. It plumps and adds volume like nothing else!' And with a flash of blusher and sweep of balm, we're good to go.
