Hot Hair Trend: January Jones Makes Like Sienna Miller & Katy Perry With Pink Highlights

It appears that January Jones has been swatting up on her spring summer catwalk references, because the actress appeared at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills sporting a pale blue studded Jenny Packham dress with washed out pink streaks in her blonde tresses. And we can tell you that the lovely lady is in very good catwalk company…

When it comes to beauty looks it’s no secret that the spring summer catwalks tend to bring a profusion of pastels and eye-popping brights. This season, backstage areas bore witness to an unforeseen abundance of colour in the form of a brand new breed of bright; namely colours that are neither fluro, nor primary but somewhere in between. Think raspberry, rose, tangerine, spearmint, azure, vermillion, amethyst applied any which way you want to eyes, cheek, lips and you’ve guessed it, hair.

Thakoon and DSquared2 Spring Summer 2012

Backstage at Thakoon, Issey Miyake, Narcisso Rodriguez, Peter Som and DSquared2 (phewf!), this obsession with candy-coloured hair was inspired by everything from Indian festivals, to organic flowers and seaside sweeties and as models finished one show with bubblegum locks and dashed to another where glossy blowups were on order, backstage teams invented portable washing stations to remove colour in tip top time.  Needless to say we’ve been obsessed ever since… What better way to complete a new summer wardrobe than by matching your most coveted colour tone to a streak or two in your hair?

At it’s not just models who have been working the trend (though we would probably put money on catwalk darling Charlotte Free getting the colour ball rolling when she rocked up at fashion weeks with hot pink tips in her beach blonde hair). Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, Katy Perry and Lauren Conrad quickly followed her lead, dipping their toes into the trend.

“While working a head of sea blue candyfloss might be too full on, there’s nothing more charming than loose streaks of colour poking out through a tousled blowout,” says session stylist Zoe Irwin “this is a much more subtle and wearable way to work the trend.” Go for an instant update by adding a few temporary extensions into the lower part of your hair and styling as normal.

Take note that, while darker skin tones can give any shade a go, paler English-rose complexions should stick to cool flattering tones like blue, turquoise, mint green and pale pink, while matching a colour streak to your eye will make them pop! Ooh, and nothing looks better that orange in warm chestnut or caramel hair.
