Rihanna, Michelle Williams & Taylor Momsen Wear Matchy-Matchy Lipstick: Do or Don't?

While partaking in some casual web-browsing in search of makeup inspiration for a black tie dinner tonight, we happened to stumble across last night’s pictures of Rihanna, Michelle Williams and Taylor Momsen all partaking in blatant matching-of-lipstick-to-outfit. Bearing in mind the army-green hue of our lace Preen number set aside for tonight’s event, it was pretty obvious that this one wasn’t going to work for us…Still bearing this lot in mind, next time we might just give it a go…

It was Rihanna, out and about in New York’s East Village who first caught our attention.  Isn’t the pairing of her casual denim jacket, oversized gold hoops and woolly stripy beanie with a perfectly prepped, flawlessy formed and colour-matched glossy red lip kind of ironic in really cool way?

Next up there was Michelle William’s working her thing at a My Week with Marilyn Tokyo photo call. Her chic red a symmetrical dress looked super cute with her peroxide blonde pixie and matching matte red lip

Then we spotted Taylor Momsen, wearing scary leather trousers that boasted a weird under-the-crotch zipper. We weren’t sure whether it was this or her matching black lipstick that made us feel more uneasy.

A speedy phone call to celebrity makeup artist and Grazia fave Rachel Singer-Clarke revealed that there are a whole host of rules to obey when it comes to working this one. She explains…

‘Do avoid throwing a matching nail into the lip/dress equation.  Go for one or the other or the result will be too busy.’
‘Don’t get carried away matching a lip colour to your outfit and forget that it needs to work with your skin-tone. Beauty trends like this are fun, but you need to consider your individual features and what suits them too.

‘Make sure that the colour of your lipstick and outfit match exactly; one shade off and it screams mis-matched!’

‘When working this trend get dressed and apply your makeup in good daylight to avoid embarrassing colour clashes and mismatching.’

What are your thoughts?
