Grazia Daily was lucky enough to to grab a few moments with the brilliantly talented Charles Worthington backstage at last night's BAFTA's, who this year is celebrating 25 years as one of Britain's best known hair stylists. In spite of being super busy, Charles and some of his A-list clients (like Emilia Fox, above, and Jessica Brown Findlay, bwlow with Charles) gave Grazia Daily a few moments to talk about their red carpet hair looks, as well as what he expects to see in the upcoming awards season.
Grazia Daily: Whose hair did you style for the BAFTAs?
Charles Worthington: I love the modern twist on the classic ballerina bun that I created for Jessica Brown-Findlay. Jessica’s one of my favourite actresses of the moment and was also my muse for the Charles Worthington Limited Edition BAFTA 25 Years Collection. I also styled the beautiful British actress and great friend of mine Emilia Fox, Gemma Chan, Holliday Grainger and Dawn Porter to name just a couple.
Grazia Daily: Can you run through the products and techniques you used to create one of the looks?
Charles Worthington: The Ballerina Bun is very easy to replicate, you just need a simple hair elastic and bun ring to style, with Limited Edition Big Bounce Spray (£5.19) for hold.
Grazia Daily: How much does the dress affect the hairstyle you create?
Charles Worthington: The dress definitely affects the hair style that we create. We work very closely with the actresses in the weeks leading up to an event like the BAFTAs, often creating several different hairstyles with each dress to create the perfect look. Often, if a dress has an intricate neckline that needs showing off, I’ll style hair swept back off the face, or in a loose side chignon.
Grazia Daily: Were there any last minute dramas?
Charles Worthington: There are never any last minute dramas, the only thing that might happen is a last minute dress change and often if the dress changes, so does the hair. I never see it as a drama, more a challenge!
Grazia Daily: How are the attendees feeling before hitting the red carpet? Do you help to calm their nerves?
Charles Worthington: The Charles Worthington Style Suites at The Savoy are an inner sanctum of calm before the storm! I always chat to the actresses whilst I style their hair to put them at ease and to help them relax. Having their hair styled is a great way to relax away from the cameras and by the time they leave the Style Suite they look so fabulous that any nerves have disappeared.
Grazia Daily: What's the hot hair trend this awards season?
Charles Worthington: The key trend is volume, whether your hair is up or down. I also really like seeing more spontaneous hair on the red carpet, either loose chignons or relaxed wavy down-dos.
Grazia Daily: Whose hair are you loving at the moment?
Charles Worthington: I absolutely adore Emilia Fox’s new red hair. It’s such a bold move and looks stunning against her English rose complexion. It’s so refreshing when people are brave with their hair, as a dramatic change of colour can totally reinvent you.
Grazia Daily: What's your favourite hairstyle to create?
Charles Worthington: I really enjoy creating red carpet hair. I love taking the architecture of someone’s face and creating something totally unique and individual to them.
Grazia Daily: What's your top tip for red carpet hair?
Charles Worthington: This season red carpet hair is all about volume, and the key to this is preparation. A top tip is to spritz Limited Edition Big Bounce spray (£5.19) through dry hair, then dry it in using a hair dryer. This gives the hair guts and makes it pliable, giving the style great last power so you can party into the early hours.
Grazia Daily: We spotted a lot of headbands on the Golden Globes red carpet – what are your thoughts on hair accessories?
Charles Worthington: Hair accessories like hair bands and broaches can look fabulous, especially if the design of the dress is completely simple and plain. They add fantastic extra sparkle and bring even more glamour to the red carpet.
