Recently, when out and about, we have been spotting more and more cool girls with less and less hair; at the back and sides, that is. That’s right, it seems that everyone around London is getting their heads buzz-cut at the sides and looking generally brilliant as a result. Then there are the pop stars who look wicked partially shorn, like Emeli Sande, (above) Robyn and Tahita from the New Young Pony Club . . . THEN there’s Alice Dellal, the international supermodel who looks alternately rocky and tres chic with her one side bald, the other side of flowing tresses.
I had been growing out my hair from a pixie crop for some time – all summer in fact, partly because I’d been too busy running around to go to the salon but also because I'd been dreaming of undercuts for some time and felt that extra bit of length was needed to achieve the right look. When the time had come, I took myself off to visit the brilliant BLEACH salon, on an extremely sunny day in Dalston - to face the clippers.
First stage was a thorough all-over bleaching, to get rid of the roots and brighten up the base colour. Then it was time to sit back in my chair, leave the bleach do its work, and chat with the lovely Alex Brownsell, the salon owner who was being interviewed for a big American magazine, and Bradley, my stylist (below) who was excited to have been retouching the highlights of some particularly famous acrobatic Irish popstar twins the evening before. Unfortunately we can’t mention their name because it’s a top secret. *chuckles*
Once the hair was all nice and white and shiny bright, Bradley sectioned off an area at each side of my head with a curved parting . . . and PLUGGED IN THE CLIPPERS!
He made short work of my side bits and stopped to admire the results thus far. Because the remaining hair was so light from the bleach it did look a bit bald in the sunshine. How exciting! I started to feel really rock and roll and couldn’t stop smiling to myself in the mirror.
The final stage of the transformation was a pastel blue rinse – just on my locks, not on the sides. Et Voila! I can’t wait to go for a walk down my local high street with my new blue ‘do!
