New 'spokesmodel' ALERT! Joan Smalls for Estee Lauder!

14 December 2010

Puerto Rican Queen of the catwalk, Joan Smalls, has recently walked for Christian Dior, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Versace and everyone’s favourite gothy star-maker, Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy, and now she's bagged an Estee Lauder ‘spokesmodel’ role! Yay! And well done! Despite the fact that many of the most in-demand models EITHER specialise in runway or photographic work, Joan’s dewy face is as lush as her legs and the beauty industry are just as keen on her as the couture houses.

Joan has been modelling since 2007, although it wasn't until 2009 when she met Riccardo Tisci that things began to go big for her. She modelled for the Givenchy Couture collection in January of this year and since then has been in constant demand. We think there is something quite pop star-ish about her face. Rather than looking edgily unfamiliar or alien, her enormous eyes and wide smile give her a cartoonish, exaggerated beauty. Is it only us who thinks she looks a bit like Lisa Bonet?

Other fashion voices have leapt to approve of the appointment as it represents a victory for racial diversity in fashion – a point which never really goes away as fashion fans, campaigners and even the likes of super supermodel Naomi Campbell continue to complain that the fashion/beauty industries are still disproportionately filled with white faces.  Estee Lauder has always striven to create a ‘global’ image for itself in its ads, and it’s current ambassadors include Elizabeth Hurley, Constance Jablonski and Liu Wen, although in the past, their faces have included everyone from all-American Gwyneth Paltrow to Liya Kebede from Ethiopia. The first adverts featuring lovely Joan will be out in May. Can’t wait!
