EXCLUSIVE: Liz Martins Reveals The X Factor Beauty Secrets!

21 October 2010

Grazia Daily has just had a natter with the lovely Liz Martins, head make-up artist and one third of the X Factor glam squad. In fact, we were on the blower to her first thing this morning - so excited were we about getting the goss on last week’s show - and woke her from a well deserved rest after another long night of working with the contestants (woops, sorry Liz!). Oh yes, that Mr Cowell is working his team super-hard. So after giving Liz a moment to get her beauty hat on, we wanted to hear all the gory details. Here are the best bits...

Last Saturday, Rebecca, the emerging style queen of the show, worked a cherry black glossy lip. Loved it or loathed it, Grazia Daily thought it rocked!  ‘Rebecca wasn’t sure at first,' Liz told us. 'She was a bit nervous so I convinced her to try it and she ended up loving it! Deep, dark, statement lips are huge for A/W '10 and by adding a slick of gloss, it's transformed into a soft goth look to make it pretty and feminine.’ To create Rebecca’s look, Liz used MAC Lipstick in Cyber, L’Oreal Paris Infallable liner in Black and L’Oreal GlamShine Reflexion in Sheer Cassis (Cheryl Cole’s fave shade, fyi!).

We were also obsessed with Treyc’s back glossy eye, which was ‘so easy’ to create, according to Liz. ‘It only takes one slick of Make-Up Forever’s black grease paint stick, before leaving it to crease so it was rough around the edges.’ That’s our party look sorted then!

And it’s no surprise to hear Katie Waissel, who’s already been compared to Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani, is into make-up the most. ‘She’s the most fashion forward and knows her style,’ Liz explained. ‘She’ll come along with tears from magazines of looks she likes and is open to trying everything.’ Yep, a true beauty chameleon if ever we saw one.

Liz also works with Girls Aloud so drew inspiration from the superstar girl group to develop the image for budding starlets, Belle Amie. ‘The band was singing a sixties song so I used the same technique on the eyes as I did for the Girls Aloud 'The Promise' video,' she revealed. 'The white on the waterline and lower socket makes the eyes look huge.’ Good tip, girls!

And what of the boys? ‘Obviously, all the girls love having their make-up done and some of the boys do too!' Liz explained.  'Harry from One Direction literally jumps in the make-up chair but I think that’s because he has a crush on one of my assistants!’  Cute!

Of course, we had to know what Simon Cowell makes of the looks so far. ‘Simon really wants to push the contestants to look edgy, fashion-y, editorial and strong,' Liz told us. 'With Cher on Saturday, I took a risk and paired her make-up down, making her more natural but when Simon saw her on the screen he wanted to completely change it.' And what Simon wants... 'So we went for the strong silver eye, which worked well with her street, 'raggamuffin' personality.’
Finally, what can we expect for this weekend's show? ‘It's Guilty Pleasures week, so you can expect some flamboyant and fun make-up, maybe even some body paint - I’m saying no more!’ Oh Liz, what a tease you are! Tune in on Saturday to see the results.
