(Sing if you’re) Glad to be GREY!

"You can get older and still be rock'n'roll," said model of the moment, Kirsten McMenamy. "I thought all that grey hair would make a beautiful picture." We’re used to famous ladies whose hair changes colour more often than the rest of us change our socks.

Some people (hello there Veebie!) even have hair that can grow from short to long overnight, and Gaga, Kelly Osbourne and Tavi have all been rocking fake grey hair in recent months but today we’re writing this in honour of a woman who’s been cast because of her striking natural grey tresses!

Kirsten has graced the cover of an Italian glossy as well as Brit style magazine Dazed and Confused – with her waist-length silver locks the main attraction. Meanwhile, Gaga's hair is such a style statement that this month she is naked but for her silvery mane (and a few diamonds) on the cover of Vanity Fair photographed by fashion legend Nick Knight. Perhaps the originator of the silver fox style is Daphne Guinness, who has been rocking her Cruella Deville locks since school.

The look has been bubbling under for a while now – see Kristen herself on the runway for Calvin Klein A/W ’10 and models for Gareth Pugh’s mostly grey S/S collection for which the girls had correspondingly coloured hair. Kirsten was huge in the ‘90s and is always thought of as the most rock and roll of the supers. She’s now a mum of three but has attracted a lot of attention this season with her ‘taboo breaking’ ‘do. Along with her magazine covers, she's the face of Lanvin this season and was possible the only model strong enough to form the centrepiece of Viktor and Rolf's crazy 'undressing' catwalk at Paris Fashion Week in February.

We approve of this trend muchos. It looks arresting and it’s nice to have a bit of variation, isn’t it? AND it could possibly make other silver ladies feel more confident about wearing their hair as nature intended. Any hairdressers now panicking that they’ll go out of business if half their customers stop dyeing their hair and revert back to their untampered state can relax though. Apparently there is a section of Kirsten’s glorious barnet at the back which is still dark, which she gets her coiffeur to lighten for her to fit in with the rest. Sometimes even supermodels need a BIT of help, you see.
