Grazia Daily fell a little bit in love with Daphne Guinness last month when we spent the afternoon gawping at her from afar during the Fashion Fringe round table discussion with Nick Knight, Amanda Harlech, John Galliano and Colin McDowell. Despite the sweltering heat, our favourite fashion muse was looking ladylike but edgy (good combo) in a McQueen shift, heel-less Gaga-esque shoes, an emerald green Kelly bag and armfuls of diamond bracelets. We can confirm that, in person, Daphne is ridiculously pretty and uber-petite.
And it seems we're not her only fans, because make up maestro Francois Nars has just signed her up as the face of Nars cosmetics A/W'10 ad campaign; “I love Daphne — she has incredible style,” Nars told WWD. “She fits the image of the brand so well. She’s very creative and elegant and is a chameleon. And she really loves makeup — the whole process of it. Any makeup artist dreams of having someone like that as a muse.”
Daphne and Francois are longtime friends and this is not the first time the heiress has posed for him, as last year, the pair collaborated on the 15x15 photography project. Right now it seems that Daphne may be effortlessly morphing from designer patron/muse to a serious contender on the modelling circuit - this season she will also model for a second time in the ad campaign for Akris accessories - and all this at an age when even top supermodels are surprised to find themselves getting a second chance. Guinness herself admits “It’s kind of strange in life where you meet someone and you get their vision, they get you — it just felt right.".
Daphne even has a new eyeshadow named after her a rich, royal purple. “When I started thinking about colors that meant Daphne to me, purple felt right" says Nars "and when I tried it on her at the shoot, I immediately knew it needed to be named for her.” Naturellement, Guinness wears the 'Guinness' purple shadow in the campaign, along with Mangrove yellow-green shadow; Douceur soft pink-brown blush, and Rouge Basque Lipstick.
It's possible that not everyone will recognise the high profile fashionista - her distinctive two-tone grey hair has been dyed jet black for the campaign - as it was for her shoot for Akris. Seems even the ultimate style icons sometimes have to compromise their look for a designer's vision.
The campaign and products launch on nars.com from July 15.
