Well, we’re feeling rather smug with ourselves this morning. Why? Because the first images of Diane Kruger for Calvin Klein Beauty have landed in our inbox, and as much as we hate to say we told you so, it looks like we were spot on:
When GraziaDaily heard she had snagged the coveted Calvin Klein fragrance campaign, we couldn’t picture the oh-so-elegant Diane going down the racy route – surely she wouldn’t pull an Eva Mendes and sprawl seductively in little more than body grease and a bed sheet? And as predicted, here she is in all her cheekboned glory looking positively angelic (seriously, is that a halo?). The floaty Calvin Klein Collection dress is fresh, feminine, and surprisingly demure for the brand that’s historically notorious for its risky adverts. As Diane said herself, “They showed me the concept, and it was classy. So I knew from the beginning that I didn’t have to take my clothes off.” And guess what? Not one nipple in sight!
So why such a blatant departure from all that saucy business? The Creative Director, Francisco Costa, told WWD, “sex is in our DNA, but this fragrance speaks to a different audience. It is very much the spirit of [the Calvin Klein] Collection — elegant, sophisticated, timeless and beautiful — and designed to appeal to a more mature customer. This is a woman in her 40s, who is self-assured and secure” (we’ll ignore the fact Diane is 33 then).
So there you have it, the fashion powerhouse of Calvin Klein really is embracing a new, chicer audience and we couldn’t imagine a better lady to lead the way than D.Krug. Beauty indeed.
