The Pixie Cut is 50!

Not everyone is sure about Aggy’s new crop, but the model's boyish hair is part of a style revolution that started fifty years ago this month. Way back in 1960, adorable young French actress Jean Seberg appeared in a cheeky little black and white film called A Bout De Souffle, or Breathless, directed by the god of French new wave cinema, Jean Luc Godard.
 
The story was a gentle rom-com, and despite co-starring the impossibly sexy Jean Paul Belmondo, nobody cared much about the plot, because all eyes were on Seberg, and her chic, super-short crop. Naturally the style became the coolest haircut of the Sixties; cute, cool, sleek and modern, the pixie cut had it all.
 
Since then, style icons from Mia Farrow to Twiggy and Carey Mulligan have made the look their own. We round up our Top Twenty pick of the pixie crops in our gallery below…
