All hail the Nail Queen!

Tsubasa Masuwaka

As world nail leaders and obsessives (particularly in nail art) it’s no surprise that Japan holds an annual celebrity manicure pageant to crown a queen – and it's now in it's 14th year. 2009 saw over 50,000 people visit the event to see the gurus and eccentrics show off their nail art skills from 3D decoration to matching manicures to mobile phone designs. Forget palm trees and dolphins, this talon tournament displays some of the most detailed and intricate creations you can imagine from Hello Kitty faces to 3D flowers and fairytale fantasies told across 10 nails! There’s even a category for men, well why not?! We love Japan’s nail dedication and appreciation; we just wish we had our own UK Nail Queen pageant!

If you’re keen to experiment with nail art, get equipped with some fabulous starter nail art kits. Check out Sparkly Nails who have everything nailed (sorry we couldn’t resist!)
