Ruby Hammer shows you how to get the perfect red lip

Red-hot lips are popping up all over the catwalks at the moment, but what's a girl to do when her lippy seems to slide off after about three seconds (or the first glass of champagne)? To get the expert know-how, we caught up with TV make-up guru Ruby Hammer, to ask her how to apply the perfect red lip and make it last all night...

Step 1: Use an old toothbrush to scrub off any dead skin so you can start with a smooth surface. Rub lip balm into lips and allow it to sink in for a few minutes.

Step 2: Use some of your usual concealer or foundation around the outside of the lip to act as a barrier and stop smudges and leaks...

Step 3: Use a lip brush and load it with a generous amount of lippy. Think of your lips as being four quarters. Take the lower right-hand side first, line the outside, then fill in that section of the lip before moving on to the three other quarters.

Step 4: Ruby's genius tip is to place one single-ply layer of tissue over the mouth, grab a large blusher brush and sweep a translucent loose powder OVER the tissue where it touches the mouth to act as a 'sieve' and take of any excess.

Step 5: Run a cotton wool bud around the inside of the mouth to remove any excess and prevent that lippy-on-the-teeth look.

Step 6: Go out and have fun. We guarantee your pout will still be perfect at the end of the night!
