Record-breaking beauty at Marc Jacobs

Francois Nars (left) returns after a decade away from doing catwalk make-up

We knew Marc Jacobs was a fashion rule breaker but this time he's surpassed himself... Backstage at his NY Fashion Week show last night no fewer than 75 models were each given an individual and very different beauty look – and the show even started on time (well, make that two minutes early!). No surprises, then, that one of our favourite session stylists, Guido, admitted to being 'in panic mode'. To create the show's 1980s punk rock 'dos, Guido piled on the spray and gel and went for frizzed-out Mohawks, Afros and teased-out beehives. And the big news didn't stop there. Francois Nars, founder of cosmetics brand Nars, made his first appearance backstage to do the show make-up in 10 years. And as each model had a different look, we saw plenty to inspire: from smoky cat's eyes to poppy pink shadows, perfect red lips and highlighted cheekbones. ‘Marc wanted to bring out the character and individuality of each girl,’ said Francois. ‘It's like a New York night scene. There's a strong edge to each of them – they're fun, wild and extreme looks. It's really combining many, many colours. It's very Deborah Harry.’ Phew... shame that this time there wasn't a Marc Jacobs after-party where everyone could let off steam. Sounds like they would have needed it. Who'll beat the Marc Jacobs beauty-thon? The Fashion Week race is on...
