Sarah Palin: ladylike icon or lipsticked disaster?

10 October 2008

We can't quite keep up with the ‘we love her, we love her not' press surrounding poor old Sarah Palin. Apparently, specs are back for women wanting the ‘intelligent and sophisticated look' and the hockey mom has even got her own Republican Red lippy available on eBay. Her trademark brow-sweeping bangs and classic chignon have created a media storm, with John Mccain's wife, Cindy, offering her tips.
Today it's been revealed that ‘Alaskan moose-hunter' Sarah has enlisted the help of Gahl Hodges Burt, who dressed ultra-chic Nancy Reagan. Gahl reckons he has a few tricks for the former beauty queen - to use make-up to shade her nose so it looks narrower. Let's see how that one pans out... But it seems that she'll need more than make-up if the current hoo-ha over her recent Newsweek cover is to die down. The cover, featuring an un-airbrushed close-up of Palin's face - including wrinkles and facial hair - has caused a furore on America's Fox News, as women rushed to her defence.
And really, we get their point. Barack Obama appeared on the same magazine with all but a halo wafting magically above his head. But while we're outraged that the media has resorted to the sexist picking apart of Sarah's appearance, we can't help loving this video as a little guilty Friday pleasure...
