Backstage at Balmain: the beauty secrets

Another fashion capital, another trip backstage - but things couldn't have been more different at Balmain (where we were working on an exclusive story coming soon in Grazia). We've never seen a backstage so calm and relaxed! Models Natasha Poly, Lara Stone and Lily Donaldson were having soothing face massages from make-up artist Tom Pechaux and the MAC Pro team. Madonna's Holiday was blaring out of speakers whilst hair stylist Sam McKnight's team were giving each girls' hair nothing more than a simple bit of texture. 'It's natural only better,' Tom told us. ‘This is hand done, un-quaffed hair,' Sam reiterated. But when we say natural and yes, this is pretty simple hair and make up by Paris standards, it's not really that basic to a London girl. We counted Tom applying three different shades of foundation to each girl, two different eye pencils and three different powders! And, while hair was pretty laid back, there was a lot of bouffing and rough blow-drying going on. The finished look? A glamorous take on the girl next door, perfect for the amazingly sexy dresses and skin-tight jeans that every model loved!

Oooh, and the best beauty tip we picked up backstage: when applying mascara open your mouth to stop yourself blinking. Genius!
