Urban Cowgirl

22 June 2011

The Wild Wild West has been on the catwalk fashion agenda for summer but I’ve yet to witness much of the Dolly Parton look come to life on the mean streets of London. It would’ve been foolish to expect the regular 9-5 commute turning into a yeehahing surge of stetsons and chaps, so denim shirts and fringed bags have been the only country and western inspired pieces kicking up a bit of dust. Now you’ll understand just why I HAD to photograph the lovely Leyla Pillai, 27. One dreary walk home from work, it cheered me up to see Leila's very modern take on a very traditional look. Her white fringe jacket (vintage, natch) and pointed toe ankle boots (R Soles) are just on the right side of 1980s Dallas, whilst her pencil skirt, simple red sweater (it’s all about a good summer jumper right now), studded Miu Miu baby bag and orange headscarf bring those cowboy pieces into a new fashion context for this summer. Giddy up girlies – I want to see more of this trend!
