Grey may be the new black when it comes to hair. But in makeup terms black is going nowhere. Noir, a Canadian born eye-makeup line dreamt up by Caroline Cohen, exploits black in all its glory. Eyeliners alone come in 8 shades from soft charcoal to deep jet, marking the growing trend for new takes on black. Chanel kick-started our love affair with black, first with the LBD, and more recently with last year's black lipstick range. Now, Bobbi Brown is launching Black Velvet on counter in September, which boasts an exquisite Metallic Lip Color called Black Garnet, a sparkling deep rusty hue, as well as matte and creamy lip colours in Black Maple, a deep brown-black, Black Raspberry, a plum-toned black, Black Mahogany and Black Cherry. If they sound scary, they're not, as the textures are sheer and thus incredibly wearable.
Meanwhile the hero product from Tom Pecheux's first major collection for Estee Lauder is the Pure Color Eyeshadow Palette in Blue Dahlia, which includes a velvet black, grey, and two intense blues, which are so luxe you feel like you're applying cashmere to your lids. And for true classicists, we did spot quite a few pots of Chanel's Rouge Noir polish being applied backstage at the shows.
Even if you don't jump on the black wagon, as with fashion this Autumn, makeup next season is all about paring down. Investing in a few investment pieces rather than loads of throwaway items is the way to go. And what better place to start than with a new luxe smoky eye palette or glossy black nail lacquer?
