Meet the new ‘Premium Brunettes’

23 March 2010

I went brunette once. It was a disaster. My skin looked sallow; my eyes lost their sparkle, my wardrobe no longer worked. And my hair has spent the last three years in rehab paying the price.

Thankfully, my genius hair colourist Josh Wood  (who, incidentally, also colours the locks of Gywneth Paltrow and Hilary Swank not to mention a ton of supermodels) took me under his wing and we’ve been on a journey back to blonde ever since.

I’ve always been a blonde, at least in spirit. Bubbly, notice-me hair colour generally makes me feel younger, fresher, prettier. But slowly I’ve been quietening down. We’ve toned down the brightness, added some fake roots, and gone more Blondette – a midway point between blonde and brunette.

But, now I’m starting to wonder if I should dabble with the dark side again. Especially since everyone who’s anyone is going brunette.

One of my favourite blondes, Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl has just gone a chic ebony shade. Brit girl Fearne Cotton has opted for a new deep tie-dyed look courtesy of her hair stylist Mark Hill.  And not too long ago Nicole Richie ditched her trademark Boho blonde for a sophisticated chocolate shade suiting her new role as earth mother-cum-fashionista.  Even WAG’s like Coleen Rooney and Toni Terry are swapping sides.

So, why the sudden switch? ‘Ever since the economy downturn there’s been a new mood in hair colour and we’re just seeing the effects of it now,’ says Josh. ‘I call it Premium Brunette, and it’s achieved by using layers of gentle semi permanents rather than harsh permanent dyes.’

Josh tells me that he’s been using demi-permanents like Wella Colour Touch (in between semi and permanent hair colours) on his celebrity and model clients, which uses new multi-tonal technology. In other words, no more flat all-over colour. ‘Demi permanent colour picks up all of the natural variation in your hair colour so you get the punch with lots of gloss and reflection, which is the key to hair looking expensive, hence the term Premium Brunette,’ explains Josh.

Want to switch up your look? My fashion and beauty insiders tell me it’s cooler to go dark for summer (with the ends sun-kissed) and lighter come autumn….I’m booked in with Josh mid April - I’ll keep you posted.
