We’ve just got back from New York, where we’ve spent the last week sniffing out the hottest beauty news for next season. The name on everyone’s lips backstage? Kate Moss - circa Johnny Depp. Remember her then? All fresh faced, balloon pout, giggly, freckle-faced Kate. Ah, nineties Kate…how I loved nineties Kate.
There was Depp Kate – that grey Narciso dress accessorized with nothing but red lipstick, Calvin Kate – all pool dipped hair and post-coital glow. Nick Knight Kate - Uber glam, wind-blown hair, lips you could see your reflection in…
Well, she’s back and reincarnated for now at a tonne of shows including Jil Stuart, Rag & Bone, Donna Karan (Film noir meets grunge Kate), and Marc Jacobs (left bank Paris girl meets Kate). Then there was Wang – Nirvana-chic Kate, Luca Luca, Peter Som, and Preen – all 90’s inspired.
Grazia insider and Kate’s makeup artist for years, Charlotte Tilbury, told us it’s all about the perfect pout and smouldering cats-eye. ‘It’s the look I’ve done on her for years.’ I also caught up with hair god Sam Mcknight the other night, who told me grunge a la Moss, is the biggest news in hair for next season.
So, should we all step away from the tongs and put down the brights, just as we’ve figured out how to groom New York style? Not yet, says Sam. ‘It’s not a dirty hair, slept-in look; it’s grunge with an edge. Think Kate’s grunge vibe but with a touch of glitter, or a flash of pink – that’s the way to work it now,’ he explains. Phew…
In the meantime, cop a load of these amazing retro Kate references and the shows that she’s inspired so far.
