The Glossip…

16 February 2010

What are we all talking about on the beauty desk? Tune in to my blog, The Glossip, and you’ll be the first to know. Each week I’ll be dishing the beauty dirt as and when it unfolds. The hot gossip from the experts and celebrities I meet along the way, the recommendations and behind-the-scenes tips from the shoots, shows, events and product launches I go to every week. Plus, day-to-day solutions to the beauty ruts we all find ourselves in. Like, how the heck to make grunge flattering? I’m going for the grunge bun, circa Kate Moss Johnny Depp era – v hot right now according to our backstage insiders…

My mantra?  Makeup (carefully chosen) and a sense of humour is the best anti-ageing remedy.  Spraying an amazing new perfume (Love by Kilian anyone?!) is as good a substitute for chocolate as any other, and a good skin glow – fake or otherwise – will put fine lines in the shadows.  The thing I’ve learnt above all else? The things really worth knowing about always come recommended. Like the time makeup artist, Charlotte Tilbury, took my ‘tired’ face, as she politely put it, and gave it her magic ‘youth dew’ with a combo of Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener, Ling Freeze Serum, and Myface foundation in five minutes flat! How to survive a bad hair day?  Dry shampoo – or, when needs must - baby powder, smudged into roots, then tousled with some light, er, ‘fingering’ -  a tip that came courtesy of Kate Moss’ hair stylist and BFF, James Brown. My secret to glamming up for an event (like tonight’s Brits) when there’s no money for a new frock? Tons of mascara, 60’s liquid eyeliner – black will do, but navy’s cooler and more flattering - a mish-mash of concealer, primer and foundation, and gobs of costume jewellery.  It works every time!

With a busy job and two kids at home, I’m on an endless search for low-maintenance quick fixes – at the moment I’m addicted to Aesop’s new Parsley Seed Facial Cleansing oil; not only because it melts off makeup in seconds, but the nasal clearing essential oils make it a better-than-caffeine wake-up call. The question I get asked most? ‘What’s in your makeup bag?’ So, to kick start The Glossip, I’m going to answer that very question. Here’s the contents of my makeup bag (FYI…YSL, black patent, handbag size, in case you’re wondering) laid bare. Don’t judge me…despite being spoilt for choice, like many women; it’s a sad beaten up display of worn-out over used products. But I wouldn’t be without any of them. Each and every one of these babies has wiped away tired eyes, cured my hangover face, given me confidence, got me through a fat day, boosted my mood, and added oomph to an ordinary outfit…it’s my little magic box of tricks unveiled for you all to see. Granted, it changes from time to time (I’m due for a new season update), but you get the gist…

Myfix Foundation by Myface in Fair 03 – it’s like a photo with vaseline over the lense; flawless and foolproof
Lucas Papaw Ointment – a dry lip miracle and the best clear gloss over lipstick
Myface Lip Liner in Rose Petal Fair – my lip colour exactly, I mix this with lip balm for a natural day look
Dior Intense Liquid Liner in Black – the pigment’s blacker than black and it stays put all day
Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick in Warm Ivory – amazing on imperfections, before applying tinted moisturiser
MAC Blush in Well Dressed – A pretty sixties pink, it’s youthful and on-trend
Clinique Lash Power Mascara in Black – I apply a gazillion coats of this. You can never have too much mascara. It stays put all day and comes off in tubes in the shower; genius!
Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF15 – Great in spring mixed with moisturiser
Estee Lauder Double Wear Zero-smudge Lengthening Mascara – best for evening for the blackest, sexiest lashes ever
Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener – I wish I’d invented this. Under eyes it’s illuminating, concealing, anti-ageing…Amazing!
Jemma Kidd Lip ID Colour Adapt Gloss – it adjusts to the colour of your lips – on me it’s a raspberry pink stain that’s girly a la Cheryl Cole
Garnier Roll-On Anti Dark Circles – it’s cooling, de-puffing, and nearly as amazing as Bobbi’s. Great after a night out
Dior Skinflash Primer – love love love on cheekbones and temples; gives a glow under light
OPI Nail Lacquer in Lucky Lucky Lavender – I’m wearing this with my Chanel Jade ring at tonight’s Brit awards – it’s all about pastel clashing right now
Jessica Custom Nail Colour in Custom Red – for classic moments. It’s on the bright side of red. Uber flattering
MAC Hello Kitty Blusher Brush – the perfect makeup bag size
Revlon Nail File – it’s pink, cute and great for emergency manicures
Emma Hardie Amazing Face Treatment Moisturiser – the perfect skin primer, I start my makeup without it
