The dress: it is FINISHED

26 April 2011

So: C’est fini. As far as the designer is concerned, anyway. The dress of dreams, Kate Middleton’s wedding dress is now completed, according to a Buckingham Palace source who has declared that ‘Kate will have no more fittings’.

This is, of course, in stark contrast to the David and Elizabeth Emanuel designed wedding dress for Diana, Princess of Wales, which was famously being finished right up until the last moment with pearls and sequins being sewn on by the thousand. Could it be, then, that we WON’T see Kate donning a crystal embellished meringue, a la My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, after all? Aw, shucks.

US Designer and host of The Fashion Show (basically Project Catwalk, only with Iman) Isaac Mizrahi has taken the opportunity to speak out about the dress and the pressure on the designer to create something spectacular. As someone who has ‘done millions of wedding dresses’, Mizrahi has some sympathy with whoever might be behind the dress to end all dresses. ‘It's so stressful’ he told The Cut, ‘because you always think something's going to fall off right in the middle of the most important day of [the bride's] life. Of course, that would be catastrophic. I'm sure whoever is doing that dress is going to be on a lot of tranquilizers.’ >Guffaw<.

And it looks as if Kate isn’t the ONLY one who’s selected her outfit, with reports emerging that Harry’s lady-love Chelsy Davy has also decided what she’s going to wear. According to Life & Style, an insider at Ferretti has revealed that ‘Chelsy was approached three months ago by Italian designer Alberta Ferretti's team, who offered to dress her for free…The design team has designed two longer gowns for Chelsy to decide on for the ceremony and a shorter dress for her to wear in the evening. She'll wear a hat or fascinator to the ceremony but hasn't decided yet. The dresses are in bold colours.’ Ooh! Now remember, Miss Davy; no trying to upstage the bride. The insider then adds, according to Life & Style, ‘Chelsy is thrilled with the stunning amazing made-to-measure designs for her. She wants to look her best, because the wedding will be her first official outing with Prince Harry since they reunited.’ Hmm. ‘stunning amazing dresses’? Sounds suspiciously like PR speak to us…
