Never has the appearance of a baby’s arrival been so eagerly anticipated the world over - and finally the wait is over! Yes, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just left the Lindo Wing with their newborn baby. The couple appeared cradling their son and have taken a moment to pose on the steps of St Margaret's Hospital as per tradition. Kate looked as delightful as ever wearing a bespoke cornflower blue dress by British designer, Jenny Packham.
'He’s got a good pair of lungs on him that’s for sure,' said proud dad William as they stood before the press bank. 'He’s quite heavy. We’re still working on a name.' He also joked about the Great Kate Wait, saying: 'I will remind him of his tardiness when he’s older as I know how long you lot have been out here.' Please do, Wills.
The Prince also complimented his wife's glossy gorgeousness, 'He’s got her looks that’s for sure!' He also referred to his possibly thinning hair, saying: 'He’s got way more than me!' What a gent. But Kate was sure to tell the crowd that her hubby has changed the first nappy already. Now that we'd LOVE to see.
As you know, the Duchess gave birth to her first child yesterday afternoon. She delivered a baby son, a prince and the third in line to the throne, at 16:24 before the new arrival was announced via an email from Kensington Palace at 20:32. Cue the entire nation cheering!
It was by all accounts a natural birth with Prince William 'delighted' that his wife had a son. After the email alert and a tweet from Clarence House, ED Perkins emerged from the hospital to hand over the announcement to the Police Escot who took it to the Queen. The piece of paper detailing the birth arrived at Buckingham Palace and was put on display on a golden easel. It confirmed that the Duchess was safely delivered of a son with the baby weighing 8lbs 6oz. William was present for the birth.
Today, we've seen Kate's parents - Carole and Michael Middleton - arrive to meet their grandson followed by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla. Charles said that the newborn is 'marvellous' while Carole, who looked delightful in an Orla Kiely dress, said the new parents are doing 'fabulously'. The Queen did not pop in because, let's be honest, it would be way too much of a kerfuffle to prepare a visit of such importance, but no doubt she'll be doting on the newborn when he arrives at the Palace.
As Kate and Wills stand on the steps tonight, it's certainly an iconic moment for the Royal Family. It must also be a trip down memory lane for the Prince of Wales who was at the Lindo Wing when his sons were born. William made his first public appearance on the very same steps of the hospital in the arms of his mother Diana, with Charles at their side back in June 1982.
