29 July 2013

If Kate Middleton's maternity wardrobe is anything to go by, the royal is going to have no trouble when it comes to dressing her post-baby body. But for us mere mortals who haven't got clue, fret not! ShopStyle’s Caroline Green is here to dish her tips for how to keep it elegant, stylish but comfy when you’ve just given birth. New mums, take note...

Post-Baby Style? ShopStyle’s Caroline Green Gives Kate Middleton Some Top Tips

1 – Keep it stretchy
When you have just had a baby, If you are thinking about fashion at all, you'll be thinking about comfort first and foremost! You'll probably still need to wear those elastic maternity waistbands, but you can always get some comfortable new trousers to expand your repertoire. We love these from ASOS.

2 –Don’t get rid of the loose pieces just yet
Transition clothing is key for the first few months – loose fitting tops or dresses paired with ankle boots or flat sandals are always an easy solution. In the summer months, a printed maxi dress will see you through.
3 –Hands-free handbags
You might not want to invest in any major clothing purchases, but it's never a bad time for a lovely new handbag! Cross-body styles are perfect for a new mum that needs her arms for carrying a baby.

4 -  Happy accessories
Your body may keep changing shape for a while after you have a baby, but you can still invest in fun accessories. Statement jewellery, fabulous scarves and gorgeous footwear are a great way to keep your look fresh and your spirits up when nights may be long. Boticca has a gorgeous selection of cuff bracelets and Liberty's scarf selection completes any look.

5 – Tailored jackets
Use slimming jackets to top off otherwise loose tops and pair with skinny jeans (maternity ones are fair game!) to finish the look. Whistles has some great ones here on sale currently.

6 – Button-free shirts
Button-front shirts are a great solution for breast-feeding mums. They can dress up a pair of jeans and the tailored style is flattering on every body shape. A contrast collar adds edge!

7 – Summer shoes
Despite the sky-high heels that new-mum celebs may be wearing, flat shoes are an easy choice for most people running after little ones. But flat doesn't have to mean boring! There are some gorgeous sandals out there this summer, from simple leather (a la Celine) to beaded or embellished options. Choose a pair with a pop of neon to brighten up your look.

8 – Tummy help
No Top Ten post-partum list would be complete without mention of Spanx. If any new mums are facing an evening out, it always boosts your confidence to have a little under-garment help, and there's a huge range of options out there. We have a large selection here.

9 – Pyjamas
When you have a tiny baby, you may not be feeling up to going out…and if we're being honest, you may not get to changing out of those pyjamas until a surprisingly late hour! If that's the case, make sure you have some nightwear that makes you feel good and looks nice, too. We love these cute floral PJ trousers from Topshop and Hush UK's nightwear is gorgeous.

10 – Summer cover ups
Printed cover ups are right on trend, so there's no need to worry about getting back to your beach body any time soon! From tunics to maxi dresses, there is a style to suit everyone. We love the Melissa Odabash range.
