It’s a boy! Of course, we’re talking about the birth of the Royal Baby. Never has a baby’s arrival been so eagerly anticipated the world over and we're happy to hear that Kate Middleton delivered a baby son at 16:24 this afternoon. Is that the sound of the whole nation cheering? Yes, we think it is! It was by all accounts a natural birth and Prince William is reportedly 'delighted' that he has a son. But he's not just a son - he's a prince, the third in line to the throne and our future king (wow). As for the Duchess, she is surely very relieved and we imagine very tired! Here's how the terribly exciting news unfolded this evening...

Kensington Palace sent an email at 20:32...

'Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm. The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight'

Clarence House tweeted to confirm...

The announcement headed to the Palace...

ED Perkins from Kensington Palace emerged at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's hospital. He handed over the announcement to the Police Escot to take it to the Queen.

Prince Charles released a statement...

'Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild.  It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy. Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.'

The announcement appeared on an easel...

A piece of paper detailing the birth went from the hospital to Buckingham Palace to be put on display as per tradition. The crowd who'd gathered throughout the day (including Grazia Daily!) erupted with whoops and cheers. The name will come at a later date and the new parents could wait until the christening itself to reveal the name.

A town crier took centre stage...

How brilliant! Complete with a bell and in traditional costume, a town crier took to the steps at the hospital and declared, 'we welcome a future king, the first born of the Royal Highness the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the third in line to the throne and a new prince, the third Grandchild of her Majesty the Queen... May he be long lived, happy and glorious and one day reign over us. God save the Queen.' Hear, hear!

But he's NOT a Leo!

Given that we now know the baby was born at 4.24pm this afternoon, it actually means the Royal Prince is a Cancerian - the star sign known for being a homemaker. And what classy homes (read palaces) he'll have at his disposal!

And finally...

Paul Harrison from Sky News confirms that Prince William will not be making a statement tonight and will be staying in hospital with Kate. Indeed, the doors at the Lindo Wing are firmly shut! That's all for now, folks.
