Since starting her small family run business in 2008 the Julie Deane’s Cambridge Satchel Company has gone from strength to strength. She started with a budget of just £600 and now makes over £12million a year by selling her lovely leather bags which have been worn by the likes of Alexa Chung, Fearne Cotton and Elle Fanning.

At the launch of her shop in Covent Garden last week – which was attended by Sophie Ellis Bexter, Frankie Sandford and Louise Redknapp - we spoke to Julie who explained that she never thought the company would see such huge success. ‘I never thought it would be big,’ she said, ‘It was solely [started] so that I could pay the school fees as I needed to get my little girl out of a place where she was being bullied. I remember my husband saying if you can sell ten a day then we can get some more help. I couldn’t ever picture selling ten a day and now we make 900 bags a day and they go out to countries all over the world.’

Last year the company debuted their Google chrome advert which captured hearts telling the tale of how the company went from a small number of satchels from their family home to world- wide success. Now they have plans to launch a new super cute metallic clutch later this year, Julie explained the design process, ‘We knew that we wanted another classic bag and sometimes the most simple shapes are the hardest to get 100% right, we’ve been working on it for ages to get the shape right and the proportions right and it will appeal to everybody in the office,’ she added, ‘To all different age groups. It’s right that a bag should appeal to everybody because style knows no age.’ Too right we say.
