Showbiz reporter Dean Piper gives us the inside scoop on what went on at ASMALLWORLD Winter Weekend...
It was 10am the morning after the glittering A Small World Gala Dinner in the Salle Baccarat at the Gstaad Palace Hotel in Switzerland. I was heading down to the spa to try and take in what had actually happened the night before. Sliding into the jacuzzi Harvey Weinstein barks in his trademark growl: "A 5am finish. Man, I think we've done the right thing here. Let's try and get rid of this hangover."
The Weinstein film boss was right, this was a hangover of epic proportions - and after one of the most glamorous weekends of the year to celebrate A Small World's annual Winter Weekend.
Carey Mulligan had been the star of the show at the dinner where invited guests had pledged £60,000 to Carey's favourite charity, the Alzheimer's Society. Earlier the star told me she was overwhelmed by the generosity of the affluent crowd. "I couldn't believe it," she said. "People were donating £5,000 each and after that finished I had people literally coming up to me offering more money. It was brilliant."
The star's own grandfather suffers with the disease and it was clear the evening's event meant a lot to her. Carey spent much of her weekend with Meryl Streep's actor daughter Mamie Gummer who seemed intent on not having a hangover and was working out on
the treadmill and cross trainer like a demon while we all relaxed in the outdoor plunge pools.
Louis Vuitton face-of Arizona Muse was a pure delight with her beyond-cute three-year-old Nico on her arm for the weekend, Poppy Delevingne and Tali Lennox jetted in from New York purely for the occasion and Otis Ferry and Edie Campbell seemed to enjoy a lover's weekend (they were reading Horse and Hound like it was their bible!).
The day before we had all enjoyed a lunch in a mountain chalet. Arizona, Poppy, model Ben Grimes, Bryan Ferry's charming wife Amanda and accessories designer Katie Hillier and her menswear designer Patrick Grant were clashing forks to dip huge chunks of bread in cheesy fondue - much white wine and gluwein was consumed.
Jefferson Hack pitched up slightly late with a flustered looking daughter Lila (his offspring with supermodel Kate Moss). The pair had come up all the way to the top of the mountain and hit the slopes to race down before returning for food. The pair still made it in time for plenty of fondue - but poor Lila looked a little shellshocked from the ordeal. Jefferson said: "She's a great skier so it wasn't a problem for her."
If you ask me she must be brilliant for a girl of 10 - it was frighteningly high up and the pair hit a snow storm on the way down. Hardcore. Lila looked happy and relaxed once a huge delivery of meringue, fresh fruit and cream arrived on the table and sat nattering with her chum Iris, Jude Law and Sadie Frost's wonderful daughter.
Following the Gala Dinner on the final night we hit the hotel's premier club GreenGo for cheesy dancing before whizzing up to the hotel's Penthouse suite to rave it up - Carey and Mamie sat quietly in a corner. Poppy, Arizona and Rose Event PR girl India Langton and I sloped off.
Last thing we collectively remember is frantically dancing to Katy Perry's Firework in Poppy's suite slurping Dom Perignon from a bottle and desperately trying to find a Spice Girls CD. What a way to end an amazing weekend. A Small World hosts Sabine Heller and Patrick Liotard-Vogt sure do know how to throw a party.
