Mary's Blog

15 April 2011

Last month, Grazia magazine introduced you four twenty-somethings – Allie, Cosar, Jo’el and Mary - who have been given a fashion opportunity of a life-time. All four had a difficult start in life and have been helped by the amazing Kids Company - the charity set up by Camilla Batmanghelidjh to help inner city kids written off by the system. Today, they have been handpicked to be part of a unique mentoring scheme launched by Grazia and Reiss and transported onto the fashion front-line to be trained in everything from fashion design to blogging.

So, how has it been so far? Every week you can check in with them on Grazia Daily (right here!) and and follow their blogs charting their highs and lows over the next six months. Here, Mary, who is being mentored in PR/marketing and fashion blogging describes what the last few weeks have been like…

So it’s now week 5 of working in the Reiss head office and time is really flying. It has certainly been an eventful 5 weeks. Not only have I been hard at work, attending fun events while learning amazing new skills, but I’ve also been trying to finds somewhere to live which has been pretty hard and not a little stressful – it’s an exhausting job on its own! But the early morning alarms I had set for work did me no favours – I only seem to manage to get out of bed after I’ve hit the snooze button about four times!

As for the rest of the Grazia/Reiss mentors, these past weeks at Reiss have been pretty life changing and I’ve been able to try my hand at things I’d never have imagined before. I’ve written and helped photograph blogs on men’s occasional wear and have tried my hand at style spotting at an in-store Reiss event – grabbing some trendsetters and snapping them for the Reiss blog.

Last week, I went to Westfield shopping centre in Shepherds Bush for an event called “Big fashion wardrobe” – again taking pictures of fashionistas to showcase them on the blog.

I’ve learnt so much during this experience. Speed and initiative are essential aspects of this job as sometimes we need to work toward tight deadlines. It’s been an amazing training and I get to meet new people from all different areas - last week the very sweet duo Emma Bunton and Jade walked in to Reiss to do some shopping.  Honestly, I do something new everyday. Also, may I take some time out to mention that my mentor Jen just got engaged last week which is very amazing news to us all. Congratulations to a very amazing lady!
