As Prince Charles publically aired his accounts last week, we finally got to see exactly how much The Duchess of Cambridge spent on style in the first six months of this year. Before the royal wedding Charles agreed to fund Kate Middleton’s ‘working wardrobe’ and the books revealed in the past 6 months alone he’s spent £32,870 on Kate’s clothes.
It begs the question, compared to all the other royal public figures out there, is £32K really that extravagant an amount? To find out, we talked to experts and calculated the shopping budgets of two princesses — you can read the full details in this week's issue of Grazia.
'Princess Diana’s wardrobe makes Kate look frugal,' fashion collectables expert Tracy Martin tells us. 'Her shopping bill was said to average £10,000 (up to £56,900 today) per month and all of Diana's outfits were high end costing between £500 and £1000 (from £2,850 to £5,690 today). This was an incredible amount of money in a time when a high street dress cost around £6. It’s estimated that from 1981 to 1994 she spent over £1.5 million on clothes which included 3,000 outfits and over 600 pairs of shoes.' This means during Princess Di’s first 6 months in office she spent a staggering £341,000 - 10 times more than Kate.
