When I was in primary school I dressed really badly. This is not a criticism of my parents, they did exactly as parents should: wrapped me up in the winter, packed me off in loose cotton garments in the summer and made me brush my hair at least once every other day. It's just that back then I had no concept of fashion as a form of self-expression, which was great because it left me with more time to play with my friends, watch Nickelodeon cartoons and discover how many packets of Nerds I could eat before I felt sick (three if you must know).
I don't actually know any kids today over the age of 5 or under the age of 10, so my preconceptions of how things have changed might be slightly clouded by media representations, but I think if I was in that age bracket now life would be different. It seems like the pressure to look cool and dress the part kicks in as soon as you can say the words 'Mum can we go to Topshop' and it's not helped by celebrities who bombard us with pictures of their ‘mimi mes’ trussed up in designer goods worth more than the flat that I might one day be able to afford a deposit on.
Here are some of the culprits of this particular phenomenon...
First Madonna and David Banda attended the GRAMMY Awards in matching suits and yesterday her Madgesty posted a photo of her adopted son with a mouth full of metal and the caption: 'Someone stole my Grilzzzzzzz!!!'
2. Jourdan Dunn
We're so used to seeing Jourdan Dunn on the runway that it's easy to forget that her other job is as a mother to four-year-old Riley, who she refers to as her 'better half'. Not only do the supermodel and her son share a special bond, but they also appear to have the same taste in fashion too. From Timberland boots to Kenzo jumpers, Riley is a chip off the old block when it comes to street style essentials.
3. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Naturally when Kanye West designed a pair of Nike Air Yeezy 2 Red October trainers the whole family had to get involved - including North West. The seven-month-old also boasts a designer wardrobe from Givenchy, Charlotte Olympia and Oscar de la Renta to name a few.
4. Aila Wang (niece of Alexander Wang)
Always the best dressed at New York Fashion Week, bar none, this trendy toddler was the first to wear her uncle's 'Parental Advisory' t-shirt fresh off the runway last season.
5. Nicole Richie
Not only does Harlow Maden Richie look just like her designer mummy (see matching top knots), but the A-list offspring shares Nicole's boho / rock chick style too.
