At our top secret shoot in Shoreditch last Friday we took a few moments to catch up with the fabulous nail technician Jenny Longworth to talk about everything you could possibly want to know about nails this season. Check it out!
Grazia Daily Nail: So what are your top 3 nail trends for this season?
Jenny Longworth: 1. Metallics for sure, along the lines of disco balls and Studio 54. Chanel Le Verni in Peridot is an incredible two-tone greeny, goldy blue which the fashion world can't get enough of right now. I also really love using glitter, like I did for Jessie J's nails at V Festival. Layering miniature diamante crystals over glitter is a great way of creating a treasure trove encrusted look. It's possible to create so many different effects by layering different polishes, different glitters and shimmers over black polish. Try Revlon's brand new Facets of Fuschia - It really is amazing.
2. Burnt autumnal shades are definitely having a moment. Orange and ochres, spicy sunset shades look expensive, sophisticated and grown up.
3. There's a definite texture trend going on. For Julian j. Smith I created a leather effect nail using real bits of leather, and a snakeskin effect with red and beige leather. Chanel have also launched these denim polishes. It's about making your nails another accessory and recreating the fabrics on the nail. Animal print is also massive.
GDN: Which A/W shows did you love for their unique nails?
JL: Julian j. Smith was my fave, the Holly Fulton gold and silver Joan Collins-inspired glitter nails were fabulous as were Topshop Unique's Dalmatian print ones by my friend Sophy Robson.
GDN: What is your fail-safe nail colour of choice?
JL: Revlon Red or Revlon Fire and Ice (This was their first nail varnish on the commercial market back in the 30s). I undoubtedly always go back to the classic red - It’s a colour that will never go out of fashion.
GDN: What key wardrobe pieces will you be teaming your manicure with this season?
JL: I've spent so much money on clothes this season! I bought a really nice dress in LA at Joyrich when I was there with Jessie J for the VMA's awards. I love graphic prints and vintage pieces, a sort of 80's mixture. Style wise I love Antonia's women and I think I’d like to be that woman! As a rule I'm more inspired by art and imagery as opposed to people. I love the old Biba posters. Holly Fulton always does gorgeous pieces, especially her the bags. I'd love one of those.
GDN: What's your favourite place to go out?
JL: I love the gay bars in Soho and Vauxhall, the Big Chill on Brick Lane and the Brickhouse too.
GDN: Do you ever get to paint your own nails?
JL: Yes sometimes, but if I am working I don’t really bother because they get trashed so quickly. I love really long point extensions with nail art but tend to wait till just before I go out though to do them. It's always something ghetto fabulous though if I do!
GDN: If you could do anyone's nails, dead or alive, who would it be?
JL: Lil’ Kim or Nicki Minaj - I would give Nicki the sickest 3D pastel Barbie nails and for Little Kim I would do some ghetto fabulous ones.
