Glimmers of sun? It can only mean one thing: festival season! So pack the cider, wellies and shades – here’s your print-out-and-keep 2014 guide.

1. Best for big names: Wireless

When: 4-6 July
Who to see: Pharrell, Kanye,
a reunited Outkast, Bruno Mars, Drake and Salt-N-Pepa.
Where it’s happening: Finsbury Park, London; Perry Park, Birmingham.
Essential kit: adidas Firebrand jacket – come on, it’s Pharrell.

2. Best for flashing your grillz: Lovebox

When: 18-19 July
Who to see: The Horrors, M.I.A., A$AP Rocky and Nas.
Where it’s happening: Victoria Park, London.
Essential kit: Vans (official hip-hop footwear).

3. Best for food: Wilderness

When: 7-10 August
Who to see: it’s not about the bands, it’s about the food – there’s the Moro Souk Tent, long-table banquets, plus the likes of chef Angela Hartnett.
Where it’s happening: Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire.
Essential kit: a bib!

4. Best for celeb spotting: V Festival

When: 16-17 August
Who to see: Justin Timberlake, The Killers and a load of MICs and TOWIEs in the VIP area.
Where it’s happening: Hylands Park, Chelmsford; Weston Park, Staffordshire.
Essential kit: phone (for papping).

5. Best for relaxation: Green Man

When: 14-17 August
Who to see: indie faves Angel Olsen and Speedy Ortiz.
Where it’s happening: Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons.
Essential kit: heels – this is the home of glamping.

6. Best for retro thrills: Hop Farm

When: 4-6 July
Who to see: Grace Jones, Brian Wilson, Echo and The Bunnymen and Deacon Blue.
Where it’s happening: Paddock Wood, Kent.
