We often have Insta-envy of Chelsea Leyland's oh so cool festival snaps. The DJ was born and raised in London and now is based in New York - but she still has a very British approach to festival style. She kicked off her festival season at Coachella last week, where she wore printed playsuits and bright sunnies. We spoke to Chelsea about how to do festival style the right way and not the cringe way...

1. On cliched Coachella style...

'Coachella is funny, it's so different from English festivals. It hasn't got a grimey feel. People dress up too much there. British girls are more authentic. They wear wedges at Coachella – it's one thing to wear to a party first, but during the festival it's too much. You want to think about your style, but you want to be there for the music.'

2. On what you should wear to Coachella...

'I’m about comfort. You want to be warm, but still cute. I was so excited to wear short Hunters, because they keep your feet dry and Coachella is so dusty and sandy, shoes get ruined. I love wearing vintage dresses, jean shorts, silk tops, old Nike hoodies and floral crop tops.'

3. Is it ok to wear Chanel to a festival?

'I wouldn’t want to be head to toe in designer, but jean shorts and a t shirt wih a Chanel bag is fun. If you’re not going to worry about it getting ruined and will use it like a normal bag, then it’s good. It’s all about a vibe and how it feels. You know if it’s too much.'

4. The festival style she admires...

'My friends - the boring answer. I think stars often look too festy. I like how the Brits do festival vs how people do festivals in America, when it all looks too put together.'

5. Her festival beauty bag...

'Dr McCrene, 37 Extreme. This cream is amazing. Everyone keeps asking me what I’m putting on my skin right now – it’s changed my skin and makes it look like it has been photoshopped. I'd pack eyeliner, mascara and rosewater spray to cool you down. For the lips - Lipgloss by MyTerry and Dragon Girl by Nars.'

6. Why floral headbands are cringe...

'I'm not into the floral headbands unless they're actually flowers. I don’t like it when people look overly festy – it cringes me out a bit.'

7. What's inside her Glastonbury suitcase...

'Good sexy jeans – ones that make the bum look good. I go for Topshop - the tightest ones they make. Then good sturdy boots - my favourites are my Opening Ceremony Chloe Sevigny chunky boots.'

 8. The only festival to go festy at...

'The only time I’ll ever get festy is at Burning Man – I am going to be taking a lot of wigs and shimmery things, with glitter on my face.'
