BRIDE BOGGLES: Maidzillas, The Sequel

25 June 2014

So since my last post, ‘bridesmaidzilla-gate’ continues apace. My goal is still to have ice cream/ pastel shades. The girls have been split into teams of three colours. But some of them are still moaning. I’ve taken my foot off the bridal pedal somewhat in the hope it will just all happen without me (here’s dreaming!). But behind the scenes my poor sister Hannah is looking after things. Well trying to anyway. Now its her turn to share her side of the sartorial saga…

Lucie Cave, our Bride Boggles blogger, with her sister Hannah

It all began at the end of last year, when Lucie asked me to be her Chief Bridesmaid. Well actually in typical Lucie fashion she didn't ask, but instead sent me a WhatsApp saying "I forgot to ask but presumed you'd know I'd love you to be my bridesmaid." Ever since I was six I'd been waiting for this moment, so obviously it was a yes from me (Simon Cowell style).

Initially it was just going to be me and our little two year old niece Wynne, so it was all very chilled. Lucie told me she wanted mint green, so I began excitedly trying things on and even purchased our dresses...

Then a few weeks later EVERYTHING changed. She decided to go from two bridesmaids to ten. And this is where we are now, nineteen months and 284 emails later. I knew all the girls (a mixture of Lucie's uni mates and London BFFs) and was even excited about the prospect of shopping for them all. Shopping is my world you see, I get paid to do it. But what I was NOT prepared for was the barrage of phonecalls, texts, 4am emails and secret voicemails which have taken over my life. Amongst the madness I have considered:

a) taking up a second career as a seamstress
b) flying round the fashion capitals to see what their offerings are
c) throwing my phone in the Thames

Here are a few excerpts so you can see what I mean...

"I'd rather walk naked down the aisle than wear spaghetti straps"

"If you make me wear this dress, I'm going to have to resign as bridesmaid"

"I forgot to order my size in this and now they've sold out everywhere. What can you do about this?"
"I don't do strapless. Did I forget to tell you that at the beginning?"

"This material clings to my lumpy bits. Does it come in other materials?"

"Can you order me a size 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 of this dress? I'm too busy to pick them up though"

"Is there no way I can have another colour? I'll squeeze into her custom-made dress"

"I've gone and tried on someone else's dress and I prefer it"
"I've been crying myself to sleep over wearing that dress"
"Don't tell her, but I think she looks AWFUL in blue"
I think (read, pray) we are nearly there now. Three girls will be wearing Coast's powder blue Sadie maxi, three will be in Coast's lemon asymmetric Maya gown and three will be in Boden's mint green Charlotte dress.
In my opinion, my sis has been wayyyyyy too nice giving them loads of choice. It's her day and all eyes will be on her, not a mass of pastel prima donnas. Every other bride I've had the pleasure of speaking to has either picked for her bridesmaids outright...

Our brother Matt's '20s inspired wedding had amazing dresses and none of these dramz

OR given them a brief to stick to...

Our lovely friend and colleague Charlotte told all her bridesmaids to pick a coral dress and be done with it

I'm still waiting for the call saying we're changing the colour scheme. And when I typed that sentence, my fahhhhhshion brain automatically brought up a catalogue of navy bridesmaid dresses (there's lovely ones on ASOS and Virgo's Lounge by the way)...
