Are wedding sweaters really a new trend?

I haven’t got very far with the hunt for my wedding dress (ie: I haven’t got anywhere!) but during the search I have stumbled across a new trend: the bridal sweater.

Since New York Magazine’s Wedding issue featured a cover image of a bride wearing a cream cable-knit Joseph jumper over her silk-taffeta Caroline Herrera skirt, apparently it’s become ‘a thing.’

‘They add so much softness and texture, which I found to be extremely romantic,’ New York Magazine Weddings Editor Lauren DeCarlo said at the time. ‘Since I received emails from brides saying that they've been inspired to wear a sweater to their winter wedding. I'm thrilled that people are inspired to think a little bit outside of the traditional box.’

She’s right that even a quick scan of Pinterest – aka, the wedding heartland – shows loads of brides adopting the trend. Classic chunky whites over full skirts or bright knits to give the look a pop of colour… everyone’s doing it. I can kind of see why. Last year Burberry and Isabel Marant started the idea of ‘It knits’ with their catwalk shows and the fact they’ve seeped into bridal is perhaps suggestive of the new dressed-down-ness that’s everywhere on the red carpet. (Think K-Stew matching her ballgown with Converse).

But would you really wear a sweater on your wedding day? The more I look about the images the more I like the look – it’s a bit more relaxed and casual, a vibe I’m keen to strike with my dress. Plus, at my venue – a barn in the Cotswolds – there’s space for a huge bonfire, somewhere I’d like to be able to trudge down to and sit and gossip around when the dancing gets too much, so I’ll need something warm to cover up in. I quite like the idea of an ACNE waffle print knit or a Kain cashmere sweater. Then again – there’s also faux or vintage fur to throw into the mix. A more glamorous option, perhaps?
