For the iPhone dependent, Whatsapp is a way of life - text messages are pretty much redundant other than between you and your gran or anyone you'd strictly prefer not to know your 'last seen at' time.

But there's bad new for addicts of the instant messaging app: Whatsapp could be banned in the UK under the 'snoopers' charter' law - aka the Draft Communications Data Bill - if it's passed. iMessage and Snapchat would also be getting the boot from your app library.

It's got us feeling like:

The law would aim to prevent people from using any app which uses encrypted messages and could therefore be seen as a 'terrorist safe space'. When you send a message from any of the above apps your messages are scrambled, meaning that if need be, they could not be accessed by M15 and related security agencies.

The news comes after David Cameron warned earlier this year: “In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which we cannot read? My answer to that question is no we must not."

"If I am Prime Minister, I will make sure it is a comprehensive piece of legislation that makes sure we do not allow terrorist safe spaces to communicate with each other."

Home Secretary Theresa May has also suggested that the Government will push the new legislation through this Autumn. It's thought that the terrorist atrocities in Tunisia and France have encouraged the government to act fast on the matter.

A bill on the law was previously blocked by the Liberal Democrats, but with the Conservatives now in the majority, it's highly likely it will be passed.

However, if the apps are adapted to co-operate with the new restrictions and start to make our data and messages accessible, they could be saved.
