MaxMara Resort 2016: Anglomania

To celebrate the opening of its flagship Old Bond Street store, the MaxMara Resort collection, shown in London this morning, was an homage to all things British, the show notes read. More specifically this was a reference to the work of Cecil Beaton and thoroughly Anglophile pursuits and sartorial styles – hunting, boxing, city gents and Victorian garden flowers – were to be seen mixed and matched throughout.

The show opened with navy pinstripe – the eased and oversized double-faced coats this brand is loved for looked as relaxed as ever, pencil skirts falling to mid-calf and skinny trousers with a split at the ankle were long, lean but never constricting. Later, tiny deer leapt across silks in classic shades, roses were scattered across more – small, large and overblown to the point of abstracted in gorgeous dusty pastel hues.

The fashion follower who heads for MaxMara wants to feel comfortable as well as stylish in her clothes. Suffice it to say she won’t be disappointed with broad, smocked elasticated waistbands – on wide-legged trousers, all-in-ones and culottes. Or were the latter boxing shorts? Fur mittens, deconstructed helmets, a shimmering gold robe and haute string vests certainly appeared to channel this sport: a witty and irreverent touch.
