The Duchess of Cambridge has just left the Lindo Wing with Prince William and her sleeping daughter, stopping for several minutes for pictures on the steps before driving home to Kensington Palace.

Kate wore a yellow buttercup-print Jenny Packham dress, with three-quarter-length sleeves and an ombre-effect skirt. Kate fans will know that she wore a blue Jenny Packham dress when she left the Lindo Wing following the birth of Prince George. As for the princess, she was wrapped up in a white knitted blanket.

The Duchess also sported a very princessy blow dry - she looked unbelievably polished considering just 10 hours earlier she was in labour. Her hairdresser Amanda Cook Tucker was seen going into the hospital in the afternoon, just as she did following the birth of George.

Kate and William were at the hospital for less than 12 hours as they welcomed their daughter at 8.34am this morning, after going into St Mary's at 6am.

Kensington Palace announced the news of the birth on Twitter, writing: 'Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am. The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & members of both families have been informed. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.'

Kensington Palace tweeted: "Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank all staff at the hospital for the care and treatment they have all received." They added: "They would like to thank everyone for their warm wishes."

Although Prince George wasn't there to be photographed with his sister, he visited the hospital in the afternoon to meet his sister for the first time. Prince William drove to Kensington Palace to pick up his son, and then returned shortly afterwards having a cuddle in front of the photographers.

George looked smart in a matching blue jumper to his Dad's, a Rachel Riley blue short co-ord, blue knitted long socks and black pumps. Adorable!

Prince George tried to walk himself but after a few uneasy steps, Prince William picked him up and carried him. William enouraged George to wave to the photographers and crowds, before he kissed his head and led him through the Lindo Wing doors meet his sister.
