It’s The Anti-Boho Brigade – Coachella’s Coolest Ditch The Hippy

Coachella has become an international dumping ground for boho. It’s where suitcases OD on the hippy stuff and fizzle out faster than that Madonna-Drake snog.

A swish of fringing here, a dash of tan suede hide there, peace-out plaits, garland headbands galore, what can only be described as crochet napkins sewn together by mere threads masquerading as actual clothes, denim cut-offs, wafty kaftans, a friendship bracelet stack or four, gilets that look stifling warm for the climate in question… you get the picture. Paris Hilton definitely gets the picture and is more than happy to act as the ambassadress-in-chief, even if she does throw carefree bohemia to the wind by lugging around a big leather workwear handbag. We can only image it’s a holdall for spare accessories, because cat ears/corsages/chain belts do, after all, render a stage-side ensemble complete.

It’s all too easy to fall into this festi-fashion boho-hole – the clothes are easy, breezy, and when placed in the heat of Cali, totally suitable for gadding about in. This look is also omnipresent in stores and therefore unavoidable – but with the 1970s undoubtedly the season’s biggest trend success story, hippy things on coat hangers are more available than ever. Being at a festival is like a green light to unleash your wildest fashion desires – and if dressing up box is on offer, then surely there are other options aside from styling it out for Woodstock’s second coming?

A few girls – the coolest of the cool – struck out against hippy headline acts and instead took a different sartorial tack for their time in the Palm Springs desert. Zoe Kravitz provided a much-needed dose of grunge – never taking off her clompy, stompy boots and choker necklace. Mia Moretti and pals backed the kooky corner, with a madcap spin on pin-up girls: all polka dot tie-up shirts, silly sunglasses, vintage-looking co-ords and espadrilles.

Jeremy Scott hosted a Moschino party – therefore adding streetwear to the normally whimsical mix. Rihanna – who we don’t imagine has even done or wanted to do boho – blazed a unique trail of lilac fur coats with matchy purple haze lipstick or blankets worn literally head-to-toasty-toe. And some ladies just kept things refreshingly – drum roll - simple.
